for anyone using dihachi points.

throw them away. They're garbage, possibly made from old foil cigarette packages.
Just had one go completely bad after 2 weeks in service.
Not thinking to troubleshoot brand new parts, i lost 2 hours to these awful things. Don't waste your time too.. steer clear.

I agree.  I could not get them to hold a setting in my 77 cb550.  I added a Hondaman ignition about 3 years ago and was finally able to set them to specs.  Neither the dwell nor the timing has changed at all since and I check every 6 months.

going electronic. It's a customer's bike.. a black bomber. Charlie's Place makes a beautiful kit for them, but man is it spendy.
And, this particular set of dihachi no longer actually contact each other. The mating surfaces burned themselves up.. But now I'm realizing there's more to the story.

This bike came to me after an extensive cosmetic restoration. The folks who did the work didn't really know mechanicals or electrics and couldn't get it to run. I found a ton of things done wrong, and got it to run great.. for about 200 miles.
Now I realize that all the paint and clear coat made for a huge voltage drop at the engine block, and the points were trying to do their job with a very limited current. It would only have been a matter of time before the other set went.
Even so, that one set looks like it never really made good square contact, and the return springs feel like old soda cans

were the grounding points to the frame properly prepared after they painted/powdercoated the bike?

Sounds like a good project.
I always liked those "black bombers" I was in a Honda shop the first time one showed up at the door in a crate. Very exciting.

We called them a Porpoise though. Or black dolphin.
