Its suppose to be 100 degrees today, its 10:00am and its already 85 so i went on a MC ride early. I took a trip down the backroads, a nice twisty farm town back road. There were some cars behind me, and up ahead i saw a deer on the side of the road looking skiddish like he was about to cross. I took a MC course and i remembered the guy said if you see a deer slow down if you can to the point where you are basically walking speed to go by them, they can jump across at any time. We all know if we hit a deer that would pretty much be the end of our bikes and us. Since there were cars behind me (on my ass) and i was going about 50mph I pulled off to the side right before i got to the deer, the car behind me kept going and sure nuff the deer ran straight out in front of the car that was behind me. He stepped on his brakes hard and creamed that deer making the car turn sideways and the car behind him barely missed hitting the whole mess and skidded off onto the side of the road. It all happened within seconds. Basically i feel like i somehow cheated death. Phew! oh well, i feel happy to be alive and happy they taught us about what to do if you see a deer, if i hadnt taken that course i would have kept going figuring the deer would wait til i went by to cross......what is it that makes them dart right in front like that?

The only instinct deer have to stay alive is to run. Just like a horse. That's all they can do, so if they're pointed in that direction when they're spooked, they'll just dart as quickly as possible.

Saying that, I don't know why the stupid cage drivers didn't slow down, too. Also, where there's one, there's usually more. If I see a deer anywhere near me (whether in the car or on the bike) I slow way down, because they try to stay "covered" as much as possible. Therefore they like to suddenly appear out of nowhere right in front of you.

The whole deer thing is pretty big in some parts of new jersey here, because of all the forests. Still though, there are a lot of idiots so you hear about it all the time anyway.

I think a famous comedian once said that if someone just put a couple bright headlights and a blaring horn on bullets, then hunting would be dead easy because the deer would just stand there!

Also glad to hear you're OK. As you found out (10:00 A.M.) deer aren't around only at night or dawn or dusk. I've seen them often in mid-summer's days and as already noted, if you see one, there is a better than even chance there are others nearby.

haha well you may be thinking of all the McMansions or possibly up north near the city, but more towards the middle and south there are a lot of forests (especially when you gt into the pinelands)

Glad to hear you're ok. I saw several deer when I was out riding this weekend and I also try to slow right down to a crawl when passing them.

Someone hit one along one of the local highways this morning. He was air lifted to the hospital.

I'm an MSF Instructor, so I'm feeling kinda warm and fuzzy right now. It's always wonderful to hear someone has benefitted from a class such as the one I teach.

We have a similar problem down here with, guess what, sheep (waits for the "sheep" humor posts) They get their rotten little arses out of the farmers paddock and you never know when you are going to come across one darting onto the road (waits for more obscene humor)

i haven't tried it yet,but they say that if you go fast enough you will pass right through the deer and cause no damage at all

Great plug for the MSF! I'm getting ready to take the advanced course for the second time, (cheaper than a hospital stay).

I had been riding for years when I learned that the military would pay for me to go to the beginner course, so I went and was amazed at how little I knew about riding, and the many tips I have learned have saved my life on many occasions.

Whenever a friend or even an enemy mentions starting to ride the first thing I tell them is to take the beginners course, even before buying a bike.

i'm signed up for August - what do you who have taken think - i have been riding for about two years - not at all before that -

would i be eligible for the "advanced" class? i don't want to be told how to shift, and which handle is the brake lever...you see my point?

there are very few people in the course with absolutely no knowlege, so that is a very small part of it, I think the beginner course is well worth it, then in a year take the advanced.

I had ridden for about 5 years before I took the beginner course. and I learned a lot.

Here in Oz we have three creatures to watch out for.

Kangaroos - jump straight at you & it if you hit a big one, say goodbye

Wombats - even truck drivers reckon running over one of these is like hitting a brick

Drop bears - you can't ride too close to the edge of the road if there are a lot of trees. Drop bears, as it sounds, will drop from the trees & they hurt. If the sheer weight doesn't get you their claws or teeth will.

True story, a friend of mine was delivering a Cessna AgWagon to a strip in the outback and he got bored so dropped down over the
road and flew up the road at a few feet. A big Red jumped out at him from a bush and wiped an undercarriage leg off.

He had a job explaining that away to the owner.....

120 mile trip from cleveland to lisbon ohio last night.
left at 11:30 pm from cleveland.
two near misses with white tail deer.
one near miss with an a-hole in a harley regalia bedecked f-350 deisel who kept taking exception to my doing the speed limit while running the deer gaunlet.
and two near misses with some cutie pie redneck girls coming out of a late night church dance...

sadly, the ladies escaped any injuries to the reputations.

If you've been riding around for two years and your bike is basically in good shape (please don't show up with a bike on which the tires are cracked and dry-rotted), you should be good to go for the experienced course. It's almost the beginner's course with your own bike and no "this is the gear shift lever. It goes up and down, then returns to the resting position" bit. I have taught one already this year and look forward to teaching the next one on my CB350f.

I want to get the most out of it, and didn't want to waste the time and money in too easy a course

Some of you may remember my dear kill on my bike last year on the Island.

Today I rounded a 90 degree corner with an uphill climb and something caught my eye on the left. Turned my head and I WAS LOOKING RIGHT INTO the VERY WIDE right eye of a deer running along side me. He must have tried crossing and decided a race was a better idea

I won again

.......... its just a matter of time I'm afraid...........
