Cant get cb500 to time right.
« on: August 12, 2012, 12:03:56 PM »
I cant get the T mark 1-4 to line up with the notch. I turn the advance plate to where it cant go any further and I can hit the F but not the T. I also noticed that my upper end rattles bad. Like the tappets are rattling.

Did you set your points gap first? If yes what did you set them at and what brand name are they?

I set the points to the F mark TDC on number 1 at .014.  Not sure what the brand name is.

You must set the point gap to .014" when the points are fully open. Don't worry, it's a common mistake. I've done it twice :P

1. Rotate crank until 1-4 points are fully open (regardless of any marks on the timing plate).
2. set gap to .014".
3. Repeat 1 and 2 for 2-3 points.
4. Rotate crank to firing mark: F 1-4.
5. ***Connect timing light, if light is on, timing is correct (it won't be on BEFORE that mark). If the timing is incorrect, loosen the 3 mounting bolts and rotate the plate to advance or retard. Repeat until correct.
6. ***Repeat 4 and 5 for 2-3 points. Points 2-3 are mounted in a mini plate, and rotate on their own to set timing.
7. Connect strobe gun to 1 or 4 plug wire.
8. Idle at 1000 RPM, should be flashing at the firing mark (1-4 F).
9. Repeat for 2-3.
10. Turn idle up to 2500 RPM, check for advance for 1-4 and 2-3.

*** Set gap after adjusting timing.

Make sure you do the dwell meter check if you have one.

Also, you won't be using the "T" mark for ANY of the timing. That represents top dead center, and is only used for setting the valves. The "F" mark represents when the points fire, and that's what you're aiming for in the aforementioned procedure. Be sure to check and re-check your gap and timing.

You can also check the tech guide for the procedure: http://www.sohc4.net/index.php/troubleshootingignitions-gettingtothepointsontime/

Wow thanks man.. I think I had it but then I lost it.. I was at the F mark and then I started messing with the points again and lost it. I'm gonna try again in a few. I did notice that when I put the timing light on number 2 plug wire it wouldn't flash. same with the number 3 wire. I only flashes on 1 and 4.

Are 2 and 3 firing does it sound like it running on all four? If your timing light has a clamp try flipping it over and make sure the clamp is closing all the way. once you set the points and start on the timing you don't want to move the points any more.

I think the plugs are foiled at this point. I noticed that the clamp has a little to much of a gap to fit tight against the plug wire. 1 and 4 have a sheath around them so it can clamp tight but 2 and 3 is just the wire and is a little to skinny for a tight fit. I took it down the street and it doesn't feel like it is running on all four at all. I think ill switch the plugs and try again. But at this point when the light is hooked to number 1 the F is right on the line.
