1977 cb750 Oil leak when removing clutch cover?
« on: August 14, 2012, 07:11:10 AM »
When I first got my bike I attempted to remove what I think to be the clutch cover.
Its the cover right next to my clutch fitted on by allen screws. Anyways in my attempt to
take it off I noticed oil was leaking out of it, at least it was a black liquid...could it be anything other than oil?
I kind of forgot about it and rode the bike a few times since then. The only problem I noticed with the clutch
is that its sometimes hard to find neutral. Most of the time I find it with no problems. I'm a new rider so it could
be operator error.

Any insight helps

thanks

Oil leak when removing clutch cover?

Year and model info will help others help you....a lot.....

I have a 550, and in order to remove clutch cover, I have to either drain oil first or lean the bike to left side....

As far as hard to find neutral, it is common in early 500 I think

Oil is there to lube your clutch plates so it's supposed to be there.

Well thats good to know...is there some kind of regulating valve in there or something? Seems strange that there would be free floating oil in there.

Nope, if you have the bike on the center stand and you start to take the clutch cover off oil will come out.

If you want to do work that involves the clutch cover just put it on the kick stand.  It leans in a way that gravity keeps the oil where it should be or at least minimizes the mess.

I am not hearing anything that is out of the ordinary here.

Its a common thing to have a little trouble finding neutral for a new rider and these bikes can be a little bit tricky compared to the ones in the rider course.

Did you take your local motobike riders course?

Good to hear. I havn't taken the course yet. The classes are all filled up until October, but I am signed up for it. I live right next to an old high school so Sunday mornings I take the bike for a ride over there to get accustomed to it.

Here's a thought. Neutral is easier sometimes to find if you're moving rather than at a standstill. Might just try that.
