CB500 Tach Cap Broken
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:47:36 PM »
I saw a couple posts on here about the same problem.  Just busted my tach cap off where it meets the head and they appear to be hard to find - discontinued and no love on ebay.  I'm going to try some salvage yards but does anyone have ideas/experience with replacing this part?

FYI, it's not a good candidate for the impact driver.

Yep.. had to replace one when I did my 500 rebuild. Luckily I found one at Barber last year that the guy sold me for $5. Little did he know..... Good luck!

Same here. JB-welded the broken part and put it on my wishlist on cmsnl.com.
Luckily, last year one was showing up.
Since then, the price really hit the ceiling:

Better be careful when taking out spark plug #3...

Holy crap that's expensive.

You could make a furnace, learn how to smelt and mold, and cast your own for that price!

I'd really love to have a lathe. I guess it would be quite easy to machine one out of an alloy billet.

When using a screwdriver as a handle for the spark wrench, it's easy to interfere with that tach cap and break it.

Ah, good to know, thanks!

Also, if anyone else needs this part, I found one here: http://honda.capitolcycle.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=2036144&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1975&fveh=123309.
We'll see if it arrives or not.

My order got refunded, they don't have that part.  So back to the drawing board for finding one for less than $150.

Whatever you do, do not use an impact driver on that screw.  From what I can find, you have the very last tach cap.  You must make sure that thing survives so our children can see what one looks like.

My tach cap is in tact and will be coming off once I get a tach plug :)
