Helmets: Black or Bold
« on: August 15, 2012, 08:18:46 AM »
I'm in the market for a new full face helmet, mine is is several years old and it's time to replace it. I'm a Suomy wearer, they fit me the best so brand isn't an issue.  For aesthetic reasons I'd go with a flat black but a helmet with a bright wild paint scheme should be more visible if a little over the top aesthetically.  Thoughts?

Beauty is in the eye and all that....

For me, I go plain white.  Black is just too hot here in Central FL and I like a bright color for the extra bit of visibility.  But all the graphics are just too 'bold'...

But, given your aethetic preferences, I'd go with bold for the visibility and lower temps.

I just bought my new full face helmet in over a decade,I have been riding with vintage open faces. The rash of motor cycle accidents and fatalities have caused me to do this. I bought a Scorpion and got a tinted sheild with it,even thought it has the internal tinted flip down visor. Sorry bought the pic,its with me in my semi.

I retired my Arai and got a Bell Carbon Star RSD.  In a word, its awesome.  Great fit, tons of air(Im in Florida too), and reasonable noise levels.

All nice helmets, I'm not looking for brand recommendations though, I know what fits me so that's not the issue.  This is about being seen and the pro's of having a bright paint job on the lid.

Do you wear a reflective jacket or vest over your jacket?  Do you wear reflectors on the front and back of your pants legs?

I would think those are more important than a highly visible helmet.  If you are unwilling to wear a reflective jacket (the most surface area and most visible part of your body) just get whatever helmet you think looks the best and has all the right safety stickers.

I wear a flat black helmet, black leather jacket and jeans.  I am fully aware that a reflective helmet, pants and jacket are safer but I chose not deck myself out in a safety suit.  I think the biggest risk reduction is riding extremely defensive and assuming that no driver ever sees you...even when you are covered in reflective tape.

My textile jacket is armored and has reflective stripes, neither pair of my armored pants have reflective stripes.  My leather jacket doesn't have the reflective piping.  I hear what you are saying though, and the point is well taken.

I thought I saw somewhere that someone is making and is on the market a High Viz helmet in that crazy green color. That for sure will get you noticed!

I remember reading somewhere that a solid colour helmet is more visible than one with graphics, something to do with graphics blending in with the background. I have a plain black full face and a white modular myself.

If you check around you can find the reflective tape in almost any basic  color. We used tons of it on flight helmets in the NAVY and you could design your own grafix. I once had a bicycle I wrapped completely with black reflective tape, during the day it looked like a black bike but at night it was one HUGE white triangle riding down the road!!!
