Fuel Cap Recall
« on: June 26, 2006, 09:05:26 AM »
I read where Honda had a recall back in the late 70's to replace the gas cap on K model CB's. Does anyone have a photo or a link to one of the replacement? Just curious.

My 74 CB750k still has the original and I might consider buying one of the new & improved ones so I could keep the original.

Thanks,
Dennis

The recall was to replace the original thumb button with a key lock. Most of the caps stayed the same, but Honda swapped them as a kit at DOT's request. The original thumb button required that the user push down on the cap while pressing the button to unlock, then release the cap. The morons in the DOT thought this was too complex. Honda did this "2-hand" thing so a tank bag would not bounce the cap open, and from personal experience I can say it worked perfectly. The DOT swore in court that a rider's crotch could bounce it open (honest, you can read that transcript yourself!), and made Honda retrofit every CB750 out there. (If your crotch DID open this, you would never have had a chance of having kids...)

I would have kept the thumb button, but the bike insurance I had at the time would not renew unless I sent in the "certification of safety retrofit" paper that Honda gave out with the early kits, indicating my bike was "fixed".. (This was American Family Insurance in Illinois, circa 1973.) Now, it needs a key (or screwdriver) to open it.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

My only real reason for considering a change was in case some wiseguy thinks a can of Pepsi (or something worse) is a good gas additive. Although I'm perfectly OK with keeping it as is. Guess I'll need to wear a helmet on both ends!  ;D

You have a 100% valid point. I really don't park my bike anywhere for a pro-longed period of time, so vandalism isn't really a concern for me. Plus, 1/2 the people I come across cant figure out how to open it anyways.... ;D

The pushbutton setup works fine everywere in the world except in the States.

It´s funny that America worried so much about the great danger of accidently opening the tanklid with the crotch that a recall had to be made.
But even now, 30 years later, everyone has NOT realized that it´s dangerous to ride without a helmet on their head.

Funny  ;)

Cheers

On this very topic, does anyone know how to assemble the gas cap latch system with the factory "rivets"?  I assume they are some kind of rivet, but don't know how to do it.  I have a tank I am restoring and it needs a new gascap and I am going to replace the "lock" on another tank with a thumblatch from CMSNL.

So, where do I get the rivets and how do I assemble the cap and latch on the tank?

Yeah, I think I took me a while to realize that I had to push down with one hand while pushing the button with the other.  I can pretty much do both actions with one hand now.  I push on the cap with my fingers and press the button with my thumb.

as an aside , I have read not ONE but Two warning labels recently,
first;;; "DO NOT attempt to stop chainsaw with genitals"
Second, "DO NOT eat ANY of the rubber components like handgrip or gearstick rubber"
There must be some real knobs out there.
Like, "OH NO, NOW how am I gonna stop me chainsaw?"
In my own experience...
It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

I do believe that I would pay some of my hard earned cash just to read the court transcripts preceding the decision to add this warning label.

Ther were actualy TWO seperate mods to the fuel cap. The very first one did not need to be pushed down to release and was fitted on 750's  up to number 1055209, then came the "hooked" catch, then later came the "locking" catch, which is actualy a 400/four part.

I still have some of those gas cap replacement hinge kits. See the post in "for sale", I think it is. These are reusable, stainless steel, non-sparking (important feature) materials.
