Test run after much wrench twisting
« on: June 22, 2006, 06:54:11 AM »
Well, after a week of wrench twisting to remove that transmission knock, give it a good tuneup and finally get rid of that dreaded front end bounce, it's time for a road trip. I'm leaving in about an hour from Spokane and heading for Seattle. Then either down the Oregon coast  and loop back or North and take the North Cascades highway back. Should be able to get 700+ miles on the bike.

Did have a small problem on the test ride yesterday. The idle jet fell out of #1 carb. It sure sounded great above 5,000 rpm but getting up there was a chore. I remembered that when I was doing the carbs I had put the jets back in all 4 carbs and was about to go back across them with wrench and screw driver when the phone rang. Because I got distracted I hadn't tightened a single one of them! Good thing I caught that before the ride today.

Talk to you all in a couple of days.

I love that country out there.  Fine roads.  I hope you shot up the Columbia Gorge and visited Multnomah.  I believe that it is important to take a few pictures of your bike infront of the falls.  I'm looking forward to hearing about the ride, and I expect to  see some pics!

I'm back! Got home about 3:00am. The seat on the chopper is like riding a two by four board. My butt is sore!. Had a great trip and will post about it tonight including speed vs rpm and mpg.

Ok, here goes:
Left Spokane Thursday afternoon for Seattle. Took I-90 which is all freeway and 70mph+. We had a 30+mph head wind the entire 300 miles. My gas mileage dropped to about 55 mpg. Stayed in Seattle Thursday night. After my appointment on Friday we headed North on back roads to Mount Vernon which is at the beginning of Hwy 2 and the north Cascades highway. Left Mt. Vernon Saturday morning and took Hwy 2 across the north cascades. That is some of the most beautiful scenery there is. Tall mountains, glaciers, un-naturally green lakes.... At Winthrop we took back roads to Kettle Falls. Thenback to Spokane.
The entire trip was about 900 miles. The bike ran perfect. Most of the way back I was getting 65+ mpg. I discovered why it was down when we got to Tonasket. The rear brake cable was adjusted too tight and the brake was dragging slightly.
I did verify my speed vs rpm. At exactly 60 mph the tach shows 3,000 rpm.
On one straight and flat section of road I got in a race with the other bike that went with me (Harley Fatboy). I easily out ran him. Later that evening I checked the gps and it showed my max speed at 119 mph!
It was a great trip except for the seat on my bike. It is like riding on a 2x4.
