New project: 1978 CB750K
« on: August 07, 2013, 06:04:06 AM »
I am halfway new to the whole cafe scene but not new to motorcycles. I have been riding for 20 some odd years and have worked in several dealerships while learning valuable lessons along the way. I love to tinker in my second home ( the garage) and have been wanting to get back into a street bike on my college student budget. I was recently given a complete CB minus the motor, along with several boxes of parts. The photo with the gentleman on it was the first and only owner who has since passed. I am starting this thread to share my hardships and successes with others throughout this project. Maybe we can all learn a thing or two! Any help/ constructive criticism would be welcome!

I purchased a 76 super sport motor for it this past week up in Frankfort IL. Paid $275 for it and have been in the process of tearing it down and cleaning parts along the way. I didn't know till afterwards, the 76 motor has a different offset on the output shaft and the Super Sport can be kind of tricky on acquiring replacement parts. Ready to have it cleaned up and running!

CycleX has solution (modified hub) for the offset.

Well I was considering either a 78 output shaft that is 10mm ish longer or the offset front sprocket to space the chain away from the cases. I really don't know if I want to tackle all of the spacing in the rear wheel or not yet.

Here is the Cyclex product:

just for reference.

To insert image in text, use the picture button between flash and hyperlink.  I never use it, but I believe it requires http address of an image.

just a few updated pics. Engine tear down has gone really smoothly. Nothing is obvious minus the rusted valve and nasty seats that prompted the tear down. After some wire brush treatment, the cleaned up well and should be ok with some lapping. Also a quick pic of the shop.

The rusty valve that prompted the tear down.

After some clean up, I think they should lap in ok.

Got the cases split last night. Nothing torn up that I can find. So that's good news.

Found my pick!
