EARLY 4 CABLE CARBS ON A KAWI ?
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:20:44 AM »
Just curious, check this craigslist add for a kawi 1000 with what looks like honda 4 cable carbs.  Are these the rare early 750 ones ?

It sure looks like it. Theres no telling how many bikes used these particular carburetors.
The darn fool didn't know it couldn't be done...so he went ahead and did it anyway.

Kawasaki certainly didn't. I can see no reason what so ever for putting smaller carbs on a drag bike, besides, it says that they are smooth bores so if thats the case then they aren't the early Honda carbs....   Interesting....

They are probably 4 Mikuni singles.

Note the lack of the CB fuel bowl "bail"springs/clips(screwed on bowls) and the choke plungers on the right hand side of the slides.

Yep, they're just Keihin "accessory" PE carbs, probably 32 or 34mm, you can still buy them from Sudco etc. Cheers, Terry. ;D

They AREN'T the most desired carbs for the big Z. The most wanted is the 29mm Mikunis because you can change the jets through the 17mm cap in the bottom of the float bowl without removing the carbs each time. The average price for a GOOD ready to run set of 29s is about 5 Benjamins and a good set is worth every penny!!!

Agree on the Kaw carbs.......Chuck.....I have the Mikuni 29s and 32s with jet changes through the bowls on my Salt Flats Landseed bike.......got them from snowmobiles with the tall emulsion tubes that center the fuel in the venturi

The float bowls do not have clips.

Still looks like nice simple carbs. No lifter arms , no bushings, simple flip /on/off choke. much lighter weight too.

29mm carbs are a tad too small for a 1000cc (+) drag bike mate, I've got a set of Mikuni 33mm smoothies that are off a Kawasaki 1000 drag bike, that I've had modified to fit a big bore CB750, but I'll probably never use them as a CB750 is a tad fragile compared to say, that Kawasaki. I'll probably get them "re-racked" to fit my Suzuki GS1000 if I ever hot it up.

The Mikuni's are good carbs though, but the advantage of those Kehins (that have the same easy to remove jet plugs in the bottom of the float bowls like your Mic's do) is that they're much lighter. I don't know whether the bodies are magnesium, but a bank of Mikuni smooth bores are a lot heavier than four individual PE's. For road use, that wouldn't make much difference, but for a racing application it's a little more important. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Any Mikuni can be bored out to max size offered in that series..so 29mm stamp may just be a ruse..old drag racing trick.. I bet Dellorto pumpers X4 would work pretty good..

You couldn't bore 29mm Mikuni's out to 33mm Frank, the 33's are an entirely different casting. Dellorto's are a good carb, but quite large physically, so I don't know if you'd fit 4 into the space available. The hot ticket for drag racers was Lectron flat slide pumpers, they're very simple, light, and physically small. Mikuni and Keihin thought they were so good they stole the design! Cheers, Terry. ;D
