CB400F lost all electrical please help
« on: August 20, 2012, 09:35:08 AM »
Hello I've been a member for about a year now and these forms have gotten me through my build, but now I need ask for some help.

I was out on a ride yesterday about an hour or so from my home and all of a sudden I lost all electrics, It is now stuck in a Garage in a small town outside of Montreal. I had no tools so all I could figure out was all the fuses are ok and the rectifier was really hot right after the biked died, I was rolling about 40 miles an hour at about 5500 rmp when it happened.

Other than that I have no clue what is wrong, any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to trouble-shoot electrical without a meter, or at least a test light. Make sure the main fuse is not melted at the end, or swap in a spare if you have one. Next, look at the ignition switch and the wiring to it.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I had the same problem on my 350F and it ended up being my ignition switch. I happened to have a test light and pliers where I was stranded. I ended up hot wiring red to black with a couple spade connectors I robbed from my turn signal relay and was on my way.

Since the rectifier was really hot, it may have shorted out, draining the battery?

Might want to get it home so you can take your time trouble shooting. Like scottly said get a meter then we can walk you through the steps. Test lights are good on the side of the road IF you know what you are doing. But a meter is good for a lot of things. The small ones can be carried on the bike. This is good bang for the buck first time meter. Most every thing you need for a beginner

The bike is 15 minutes from my chalet I'm going up tonight with my car and to pull my bike there from the gas station. I'm bringing my tool box (with a multi meter) to do any and all tests I may need tonight. I just need help so I can be as efficient as possible as I don't have much time tonight diagnose. I will be going up on the weekend to fix it and drive her back.
Thanks for your help so far!

Dirty/corroded fuse holder. Any evidence of melting on the fuse block? If so, ditch it and upgrade to a blade-type fuse holder.

I was planning a full rewire with modern connectors and fuse box over the winter. The previous owners really did a job on the bike, but it looks like I'm gonna be repairing some of that now to get me through the very short season here.

Here is a good plug and play unit. Buy it here or make it your self. Marks stuff is high quality. It is truly plug & play. No regrets
