CB550 Signal Problem and Unburnt gas!!!
« on: August 17, 2012, 02:53:10 PM »
Sup guys, got a few weird things happening... Just finished rebuilding the bike and swapping over everything to LED, all 4 signals and taillight/brake light. For a while i couldn't get anything in the rear to light up but i just worked that out today, mixed up some wire. Now however im having a weird problem with my turn signals. Key ON, both front signals light up but rears don't, however when i flip the switch for whatever signals i want, say left, left front goes out, and left back turns on. Same for right, switch right, front out, back lite. Now i still have the original flasher, 2 prong, installed so the signals don't flash, would that also cause the current to flip flop like that? Im guessing the old relay switches constant current back and forth therefore not letting the LED signals to light up? Get what im saying? Just doesn't make sense why key on i only have front signals and no back signals. Under no circumstances can i get BOTH back signals to light up, Key ON, Bike running, or in Key P.

Second problem, I seem to have unburnt fuel coming out my exhaust. I still have stock jets in but i do have a custom 4-1 exhaust with pods. To help idle i took the air mixtures out another half turn on each, so 2 total turns out. Should i try bumping it back to 1.5 turns out and see if that fixes it? Any other ideas?

BTW bike is a 1978 CB550K, carbs PD series. Float levels set to 14.5 but ive read contradicting articles whether its suppose to be 12.5. Clymers manual is useless for these carbs which blows...

Any help would be great guys, Thanks!!!

Sounds normal almost.  Concider if you will how the bike left the factory, with incandescent builds with one or two filiments.

The rear amber lights are turn signals only. If you look at the bulbs back there closely, you'll see only one filiment. Or in the case of LED, only one contact in the socket.

As for why the front drops out with the turn switch, what's dropping out is the market filiment. With the market filiment dark, the filiment driven by the flasher can flash more visibly.

As for why you are getting no flash, it's because your LEDs aren't drawing enough current to activate the thermal reed inside the original winker. Go get urself an electronic 3- prong winker. Black to + gray to load and that pesky unconnected green ground wire hanging loose under the left panel to -

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

epic, thanks guys... figured out my gas out exhaust issue as well, answered my own question, air mixture was out too far, overfueling at idle... heres a vid with 1.5 out...

You have numerous issues there. Your bike was originally equipped with front running lamps.
You can't have those anymore.
Lose the black/orange black/blue.
Hook the LED signal grounds to the green in the bucket.
Hook the + leads to SOLID orange and SOLID blue, respectively.
Do exactly the same in the rear.
Buy an actual solid state flasher. The ones on the shelves at Pep Boys and Auto zone are not that. They will handle multiple loads, but LEDs draw almost nothing, so you need a relay that will flash even if nothing is hooked up.
This is an example of one of those http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Turn-Signal-Flasher-Relay/dp/B000VTTDYY
I believe your bike has a green lead hanging free right next to the old 2-prong flasher, in this configuration , you'll actually be using it.

There is literally no way you had raw fuel coming out of your muffler from a mixture screw turned out too far.
You either have floats set too high, or sticking open, and raw gas is pouring (well, trickling) into the cylinder, OR there is no spark there, so it sucks fuel in, and blows it out, unburned.

Good luck.

I dont have signals on a black/orange black/blue. Fronts are on Light blue/white and Orange/white rears are on solid light blue and solid orange, all grounds are already connected to green for the ground.

Just bought this off Dime, should be here next week: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-lighting-parts-universal-dot-approved-flasher-relay-24-0005.html i think its literally the same thing you linked...

and as i mentioned before, still trying to figure out if my float should be at 12.5 mm or 14.5... right now they are 14.5 so that might be the gas issue. But in my previous post is a video of the bike running and there is no fuel coming out. Before there wasn't exactly a lot of fuel coming out, but when i would rev it, it would deposit on my hand, almost like atomized fuel, not literally pools of liquid gas. And yeah it was raw fuel, it lite up like no joke with even the slightest spark. Possibly the float was stuck open over fueling it and then when i fired it up later the float un-stuck. Who knows but the problem seems to be gone anywho...

Ditch the wires with the white stripes, and wire the way I described.

oh, you will find those solid orange & blue in the bucket. The striped ones run the running lights. Can't have that anymore with this setup.
