Greetings from Texas
« on: August 16, 2012, 03:39:11 PM »
Hey y'all!  Found this site a day or two ago and have enjoyed reading many of the threads, particularly those found in the Projects section.

A little about me...

I'm 42 and live in Houston (born and raised) and started riding at the age of four when my dad built me a little mini-bike.  It had a Tecumseh 2.5hp engine and was a blast to ride.  Ever since those early years, I've loved motorcycling and pretty much love anything with two wheels.

When I was about eight, my dad bought a 1978 CB750Four Super Sport.  I remember sitting in the garage staring at it and drawing it; just wishing I could ride it!  I eventually rode it for a couple years between the age of 15 - 17.  Prior to that, I had a few dirtbikes ('69 & '78 CT70s, 1980 RM80, 1979 XR80) and have stayed primarily on the dirt until more recently.

Around the same time my dad had his CB, I saw an old photo from the winter of 1949 in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was a student at UVA.  His only mode of transportation was a 1934 74" Flathead Harley.  I loved that bike, too, so I decided awhile back that I wanted a Harley and I wanted the same CB.  As of last Sunday, I can say that the "dream" has finally come true.

Some time back, I bought a 1995 Heritage Softail (Evo) and have put a great deal of miles on it.  I love the bike and have had a blast on it.  I'm not a spead freak - I've done the sportbike deal and dirt-racing thing and I'm just past all that - so it's perfect for my style of riding.

So I've been looking here and there for that '78.  Found a deal or two, but something's always precluded me from pulling the trigger - usually a title issue.  Well, I found a few on eBay recently and one of the two I was watching didn't sell.  I honestly couldn't believe it.  Especially at the price it was listed.  I emailed the guy, he made me a deal I couldn't refuse, and the rest is history.  I should be getting the bike sometime next week, so I'm pretty psyched!

The following are some photos to help illustrate the aforementioned history.  I look forward to being a contributing part of this forum and meeting some new folks.

This was the bike my dad had (although this is a swiped-from-the-net photo)

Here's the bike I just picked up...

Another Texan!  Yee Haw!

Welcome to the forum!  There are a few of us down your way,  some in the middle (Austin) and then there are those in DFW.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Hey, Really??!

Well, I live in Houston, and my brother lives in Austin.  I go up there quite often and spend a great deal of time on the lake (Lake Austin).  One of my other passions is what you see below.

Welcome Johnny!   Congrats on the new purchase, looks nice.  Another Texan here, I'm out by Lake Travis (Lake Austin is too small and cold!). Also a boater.  You'll have to plan a trip to ride the twisties in the Hill Country...

Thanks Mike and Stev-o!  I'd love to get together.  Not sure when I'll be up there, as I have a great deal on my plate at the moment.  I have to move here in the next couple of months.  I submitted a contract today, so it may be much sooner.

Anyway, we'll keep in touch.

Calendar marked.

I should receive the bike in a week or so.  According to the seller, the bike runs great and is in great shape.  I think it will probably need a carb-sync as I believe it's basically been bench-sync'd.   We'll see.  Worst case, I could ride my Hog.

Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Thanks, brother G!!  I'm glad to know there are some Houstonians here!  Will definitely hit ya up for info and will have to hook up for a ride sometime.  I ride with some buddies who live out in Richmond, Fulshear and Simonton.  My last ride was just shy of 300mi a couple of weeks ago.  Been having an electrical issue that I'm working on at the moment, so I haven't been riding.  Waitin' on a new ignition switch to start the ball rollin'.  Should have my new baby here in a week or so, so I'm super stoked.  Paid less than $1K for it, so I got one hell of a deal.

I live in the Galleria area.  Actually, behind Smith & Wolinsky's in Highland Village.  Moving in two weeks to the other side of the Galleria and am not looking forward to it.

Thanks for the compliments on the bikes and my boat.  When I decide I want something, I spend a great deal of time looking for the deal I can't pass up.  That Stars & Stripes is just such an example.  Only paid $3850 for it in 2010.  I had been rebuilt completely back in '02 and only had about 100hrs on it.  I've had an absolute blast on that boat and it's been completely trouble-free.  I've spent far more time than I care to admit on it, too.  Great boat.  Runs like a top!
