Clanking Noise

  Long story, last night when i was riding home from work, i got half way home when I heard a noise.  This noise only happens when I am decelerating, engine braking, or braking with the clutch pulled in.  Does not make this noise while stopped and the clutch is disengaged. No noise when accelerating either. I thought maybe this noise was my chain rubbing the chain guard. I removed the Chain guard and this noise is still there.

   I have this weird issue with my rear drum brake.  Sometimes I have a firm pedal other times its REALLY soft and travels really far down.  After enough pressure it makes a clanking noise and shoots the pedal bake up and I can brake normally.  The bike is parked, I do not have a center stand anymore (4 into 1).  I checked my chain adjusters and they are tight, the rear wheel is not crooked according to the chain adjusters.  I did not have that much time before i came into work today.  Any input is MUCH appreciated! 

Bike is a 1973 CB750, new chain and sprockets.  Bike has been driven less than 500 miles since it was finished this spring

Better pull the rear wheel and check that brake out. Others have reported old brakes delaminating which could be very serious.

Total lock up is possible ... and that can end up very bad.

Thanks guys!  Very glad I did not ride to work today.  Whenever i get a day off I'll take it apart.

I just got the news after getting home from work. The bike in question is my kids bike who lives 3 hrs away and these long distant "fix it's" suck. Either my son or myself will keep you all posted on what he finds.

UPDATE:  I found and fixed the clanking issue.  My brake arm was loose where it connected to the swingarm base.  The arm would move forward and backward almost a quarter inch.  Tightened it and no more clanking noise or weird brake lever issue.  I might buy a new brake arm for it.  But not a priority right now.  Kind of on a weight reduction binge.
