rebuild brake master vs new nissin unit
« on: July 16, 2013, 12:36:25 PM »
Doing a full rehab on my front brakes, can't decide to rebuild the master or just buy a new nissin 14mm brake master. I'm assuming the nissin will have a modern feel and work better? Cost is only about $90 more for new master. Is it worth it?

I did it for my CB400F, and also installed braided lines, money well spent if you don“t mind a more comtemporary look, and much better breaking.

Unless master cylinder is a different size it won't feel different if your previous master cylinder wasn't leaking. Difference in feel would more likely come from different geometry for the grip. A radial design master cylinder will feel different.

Braided stainless steel brake lines will give you a much better feel and firmer feel/feedback for your brakes.
Braided lines from Slingshot Cycles is popular and provides a good product and discounts when you mention you are a SOHC/4 member. Going with a different MC or caliper or handle bars will require you to measure and provide info for MC outlet orientation and so forth, so you get lines that fit.

I personally think Honda was very conservative with the front brake since they were the first to introduce a mass production bike with a front disk. Looking at the size and weight of the rotor and friction surface, a better MC would make for a very effective brake. They were probably afraid of liability from people doing "stoppies" or locking the front in the rain. I would look for an MC with higher pressures and volume.

I've ordered ebc rotor, pads, and lines from slingshot. Last part is to decide what to about MC. Dime city is sold out of the nissin 5/8 piston and only has a 14mm which is stock size I think. My MC isn't leaking right now so maybe I'll just leave it alone?

Popped my piston out and cleaned it up with emery cloth, looks like it has one small scratch and few small pits. Look usable?

Mine looks way worse and doesn't leak. I think one test is to put it in the cylinder without the seal and it should slide right out when you turn the caliper half upside down. Or maybe that just tests how well you've cleaned the cylinder...

Mine looked similar and did leak ... soooo it's hard to say. Pretty easy to swap it out if it does leak though.
