Adding an oil cooler to my 82 650 Nighthawk?
« on: August 19, 2012, 05:12:04 PM »

All

I am curious to know if an oil cooler can be added to my 1982 650 nighthawk, and if it would be of any benefit? The bike was not fittied with one as stock, but i was thinking that any extra care i could give it would extend  the engine life?

Can anyone recall if it someone added an existing oil cooler assembly to this bike? Would any of the oil cooler assemblies from the 83 thru 85 nighthawk 650 engine bolt up to the crankcase boss that accepts the oil filter housing.

An observation i had made between both engine cases and filter housings was that the filter housing on the 82 is longer than that of the 1983. also, there is a spacer included in the 82 filter assembly that moves the filter forward in the housing.

The thought being: (if possible)

1) What i was thinking about is to machine an adaptor very similar to the one that is sandwiched between the filter housing and crankcase. (like it's done starting with the 83's)

2) This adaptor would incorporate a thermostat, to ensure that the oil is not cooled down beyond optimal operating temperature. From the outlet/inlet on the adaptor plate, i would just use the oil cooler and lines from an 84 CB650SC

3) make necessary adaptations to secure the oil cooler to frame.

thanks in advance, greatly appreciated

I have read that the adaptor plate on the 83-85 will not fit the 79-82 engines. It is the right diameter, but the side that goes against the case will not sit flush. The (Lockheart) adaptor plate for the SOHC 750s will fit if you can find the adaptor bolt, or use the 83-85 filter housing.
In this thread, I found an alternative adaptor bolt that worked for my '80 CB650C: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=105542.msg1212066#msg1212066
