Wits end! CB500 throttle bogging... (video)
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:33:32 PM »
Ok this is the last problem im having with my 73 CB500. I cant seem to fix it. I adjusted the valves, cleaned every part of my carb at least 6 times including the emulsion tubes, new battery, new plugs, carb needle on middle position, stock airbox... the boot from the airbox to the carb does have cracks and splits, the boots from the carb to the head are only a few years old and in supple condition, tank de rusted and petcocks cleaned. I also have a loss of power and am sluggish.

Im thinking it has to be a vacuum leak somewhere.... But where?

Looks like your mainjets are sitting dry above the fuel level in your carbs.... lift the slides ( twist the throttle ) = nothing available to combust = die ....
What are the float levels set at in the carb bowls ??
AND if the petcock is good and free flowing is the tank venting properly ? You can check the tank to carb flow rate by pulling the gas lines off the carbs and letting them flow into a container. Do it for 2 or 3 mins at least to prove the flow is good over time ..... looks like low fuel levels in your carbs to me ...
More... if the carb body vents ( interlinked between carbs ) is not free to atmosphere then the bowls won't fill to required level.... dang, there is lots to these dang carbs !

Why is the idle set so high?  Is the mechanical advance operating properly?  Did you balance the carbs and adjust all four in a chase around the set?
What are the pilot screws set to?
You certain the pilot circuits are operating?
Is your choke off?

The crack in the inlet boot will fk with the idle balance.

Do recall that you have mechanical slide carbs attached directly to the twist grip.

All the nice vacuum in the intake runners goes away suddenly when you snap the throttle wide open from low speed.
Since it is the vacuum that draws fuel into the carb throat, losing vacuum stop fuel flow even though there is plenty of air available.

When the engine does attain RPM and the air velocity through the venturi can generate significant vacuum, it pick up and goes pretty good.

You didn't mention what filter element you are using.  Be nice to know.

For these carbs, the engine needs a rich idle mixture for when the slides are lifted and jet flow reduces (until the engine picks up).  Not so rich that the plugs load up but, still pretty rich by todays standards.

When it all is working properly and the pilot screws are set rich enough you should be able to snap the throttle open up to one half of total travel (mark your throttle) and in any gear at any speed the engine will pick up reliably without "wheeze".  The briskness of the pickup will depend on the gear selected.  But, it won't complain about it, in fact it will eagerly comply.

Anyway you expectation of snapping the throttle full open from low RPM and especially under load, are quite unrealistic.  You don't have an accelerator pump, CV carbs, or fuel injection , where throttle position is more of a request that the engine controls sort out for you, rather than then you providing what the engine needs to accelerate.

Looked at the vid. again... low fuel level in the bowls for sure.... clue was that you 'used-up' the available fuel by revving the bike like 2 or 3 times, then bog.... classic slow fuel delivery to bowls OR vacuum in tank/ gunked petcock....
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

Ok now I'm pretty sure it is a low fuel level also. I looked at the fuel lines going from the gas tank to the carbs and there was about half an inch of air between the petcock tubes and the fuel. The float height is 22 mil perfectly on all. I steering towards a venting problem now. How do I fix this?

I also held a container under the petcocks and the fuel coming from the tanks flowed pretty well. So I dont think the venting problem involves the gas tank.

The idle was high because I had the idle screw in too far... oh yea..... and there was no problem until I took the carbs off the bike to start cleaning them.... So it has to be something that I did/undid.

I'll let Spanner help you fix your bike.

I will mention this;  The fuel bowls fill from the bottom, and the pilot circuit input tube is higher in the fuel supply, than the mains, and mid range fuel supply nearest the bottom.

So, if the bowl fuel supply was "used up", the engine would immediately starve for fuel at idle position and die as the pilot jet tubes suck air instead of fuel.  This is exactly what happens when your tank runs out of gas.  Still runs in cruise for a bit.  Come to a stop sign and the engine dies.  With choke, you can get the engine started again and run at higher throttle positions, but it will die at idle until you switch to reserve.  Then run normally.

Anyway, good luck with your bike!  Do let us know what eventually cures your "bogging".

Well. I just found out that my petcock is fuc*&d. Im buying a new one and then cracking the carbs open one more time to blow more compressed air through the vent holes. Ill keep ya posted after i complete these tasks.

Can you please tell us what type exhaust and intake you have?

Facts 1973 CB500.

Idle is very high.

Sure... Stock airbox as mentioned before and 4 in 2 exhaust ( manufacturer unknown). One of the brass tubes on the petcock was snapped of and just sitting in the holder!!! Plus it's all rusted to shiz on the Inside and it's been leaking
Periodically.... I just got a new one for $30.

I adjusted the idle screw and it now idles nicely at 1500 ... Pilot screws are 2 full turns out from seated.

What are some other things to look for venting wise that might be the culprit??? I also ran a pipe cleaner through the vent hole on the inside of the gas cap.

Pilot screws S/B at 1 to 1 1/2 turn.
It should idle at 1050 RPM.
