Who is streaming video?
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:17:14 PM »
Here's the deal, we are sick of expensive cable/sat TV and are thinking of going through the internet for our TV entertainment. I am most concerned about being able to watch live sports programing [football, racing, etc], don't want to hear about who won on the news and then watch it the next day.
What do you have, Netflix, Apple TV? And how is it working?  What equip will I need? My 50" plasma is a couple years old, so not the latest technology.
Thoughts??

We have Netflix through Apple TV and it has worked great.
Unfortunately the Netflix content in Canada is crap compared to the US, but the technology works.
Apple to announce next generation Apple TV and change the face of video content provider.

Just have some decent ISP bandwidth and a decent router. I use Netflix through my Samsung Blu-Ray players and my iPhone. I also have a wireless bridge so I can stream to my media room.

Netflix content is basically Shiite though. Try it on your iPad free for a month to see if you like it and use it as a test.

I use medium quality and it looks fine on my 61".

I hate my $173 a month Time Warner bill.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

We haven't had cable/satellite TV for a couple of years.  Most of what we watch comes through Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu.  I use the Xbox to stream wireless, but there are plenty of inexpensive Bluray players that stream these as well either wireless or wired, as well as other options.  You can also stream from your computer to your TV if you have the know-how.  The only sporting events I watch are the ones that are aired on broadcast TV.  Just have a cheap set of rabbit ears for that.

I use Netflix through the Bluray player. With that and Hulu Plus you can about replace cable.
True, there's a lot of crap on Netflix but I always seem to find enough watchable stuff to feel like I'm getting my 8 bucks worth, but then I watch virtually no network TV any more.
My biggest complaint about Netflix is their truly terrible web interface that makes it really difficult to find what you want.
(Hey Netflix, if I've rated it that means I've already seen it and I don't want to watch it again!)
There's several websites that allow you search the Netflix catalog much more efficiently.
Do you have a copy of the Honda Shop Manual or Parts List for your bike? Get one here:

Hulu is great. You can watch all your favorite tv shows the day after they air. The movie selection is awful. I have Netflix too. But honestly, it sucks.

I'll have to check Hulu again. When I go to the site, I find mostly crap.

It depends on what you like to watch. They do have all the new network shows. They do NOT have AMC though. I love me some Walking Dead.

Ok, good info guys, keep it coming.

What we've decided to do is try it on the TV in the den, and see how we like it. But since this is the wife's idea, I'm gonna let her take the lead on when to roll it out. So, it may not be happening anytime soon?

Ah, no Breaking Bad either. I am working on that series on Netflix. I might have to scrounge to find a few missing episodes. That is a great series.

For free the first month and $8 a month after is not bad at all. I have well worn out that $8. Got in almost 88 episodes of Farscape the first month for free. I did have to rent the movie (Peacekeeper Wars) finale from Blockbuster though.

The kids watch Netflix all the time on their tv. Just remembered, they watch it through the Wii and it has a children's Netflix option too.

I do not have the high end speed and it has streamed to four devices at the same time with no pauses.
