Ding, Ding, Ding.........We have a winner !!! 1st place prize are some of Johnie`s prize Peyote Buttons. lol Seriously There is a welded nut on the backside of the ears that is definitely factory also on the LT ear there is a bracket on the inside of the ear. I`ve included some photos that may help clear this up. So I`m guessing the K0 ear and the K1 ear are identical ? Thanks for your help guys and Johnie I appreciate your humor.....Gary

Good eye Chef... Not sure for sure but on my 550's I have had, that is where the turn signal buzzer attaches to...

Possibly for a 550 those ears? On either of my K1 bikes, I do not have those.

Pretty sure they are the same as my K4 ears.

I think that means they probably fit K2-K6.

Mystery solved. After looking through ebay I finally found a set that matched what I have. The one I found on ebay is off a 1974 K4 which was a chrome set. I called my painter this morning and told him I had done my home work and these ears were not for my bike. He honestly thought his fathers was a 1969 or 1970 cb 750. I had to break his heart and tell him that the fork ears off those models were painted and not chrome. I`ve known this guy for a longtime and know he`s honest . He tells me he will get me the correct ones. Here`s crossing my fingers. Thanks to all ya`ll for your help.

Now the only mystery left is what year carries the 8.5 inch steering stem. Anyone have a clue ?...................Gary

Gary I had an issue with a lower triple tree for my silver K1... it wouldn't seat properly... Took me a week and borrowing a micrometer to find out the reason it seemed shorter was the fact it was wider then the proper K1 stem.... Let me look up the thread I made about it...

Thats not the problem Tews I measured the stem from the bearing seat to the top and one is 9.5 the other is 8.5. I ordered another lower tapered bearing and seal today so I`ll just use the one I took off of it. I would like to know what it fits so I could sell the old top tree and the stem. Money to be toward my project...........Gary

Yes you did Terry but me being as hard headed as I am I had to find one that matched the square hole bracket on the left ear before I was convinced. So technically you did solve it and I stand corrected my friend. Now how about that steering stem?...........Gary

« Reply #143 on: January 07, 2013, 01:16:13 PM »
Not sure if this helps but this is from my gold K1. I had to find a new one since the bottom tab was bent. I could have had it welded but I didn't. For sure it is original to the bike. It measures approx. 9.25 inches long. Also where the threads are is different from the other lower stem I have laying around.

Your painter may not be lying. Unless you bought the bike new, do you ever really know if every part is truly original?

Very true Stevo I asked him to get me the frame number and I would cross check it from a conversion chart I downloaded. So far nobody has had an answer about the steering stem. I would like to list it for sale but I`m not sure what to list it as...Gary

Off the work bench and on the ground. With the help of my son finally put it back on the floor for assembly. After the struggle with the fork ears I decided to use what i had until i could find another affordable set of proper K1 ears. Prepped, primed with a self etching primer and painted the lower stem a semi gloss black. The All Balls tapered bearing kit already had been installed. All in all a fairly simple process. Also trial mounted the coils after clean up of terminals. Anyone know if the routing of the spark plug wires are correct.. Tomorrow I will start the refurbishing of the wiring harness and get it installed. Wish me luck !!!...........Gary

Well I installed my wiring harness after refreshing some of the wiring sleeves that had hardened over the years. Put in a new battery turn her on and nothing .........I mean absolutely nothing happening. After pulling down several exploded views of individual wiring circuits from Hondaman ( what would we do without him) I finally tracked down the problem. The ignition switch is corroded. I could wiggle the key and make it work .I had power to everything but after working with it all afternoon it eventually stopped working. So now I`m in the market for a ignition switch. Oh well the never ending build continues. lol................Gary

ps; I`ll post images tomorrow I`m too aggravated right now.
