Gently unfold the tabs on the back of the switch, don't lose the little spring loaded parts, clean out the old grease, clean the copper parts with scotchbrite, reassemble.

Also make sure the male end fits properly to the female end. Sone times the male ends get bent

+1..... I forgot that one ::).... one of the pins was wobbly and got pushed out the back of the harness connector.

I ended up with a new switch as the pins in the lock were worn out and fell apart. I was able to make the old switch work but I was afraid to lose my keys out on the road.

Its definatley not a loose connection. I could press on the backside of the switch and make it work for awhile. But as I checked out the different systems turning the switch on and off quite a few times it finally quit working all together........Gary

Well I tried cleaning the switch but it didnt help but I did manage to take apart the starter solenoid and clean it now the starter works fine. Monday I`ll put on the oil lines and oil tank. I`m hoping the carburetor boots will be pliable enough to reuse if they are then on go the carburetors and I`ll try and get it to start.........Gary

I havent posted an update in awhile mainly because I had gotten so frustrated I had to walk away from it for awhile. The dreaded hardened carb boots......I know, I  know you can heat them up with wintergreen oil and water for several hours and they will soften up. Its very true they did and after two hours of wrestling with them I got them on but they dont want to stay on and the fit didnt suit me. So I moved on the the air intake boots and after another two hours of frustration I gave up and ordered new boots for both the airbox and the intake manifold. They are supposed to be here Monday. Hopefully that will make them go together much easier. I did get my speedo, tach and switch ( Thanks Tews your a great guy ) Installed  them with brand new shiny mounting rings and mounting hardware. Did I mention I love shiny new stuff? All my electrical is now working and getting very close to trying to start her up. I apologize for the quality of the photos but it was very cold and I couldnt open the garage door so the lighting was very poor.

You'll appreciate the tight seal new rubber creates when you synch the carbs.

Was the problem the boots were too hard yet, or was it everything wasn't aligning up?

The carb boots softened up ok but they became a little out of shape when I boiled them. Who knows maybe I got them to hot. The air intake boots were rock hard and i couldnt do anything with them aggravation got the best of me and i gave up and ordered new. It seems like this bike is fighting me at everything I try to do. But I will win in the end..........Gary

Got my new air box boots and carb boots from Service Honda today. Man I couldnt believe the difference my old ones were as hard as a rock. Seriously from start to finish it only took about an hour to put the carbs and top half of the air box on. That includes taking the carbs back off and removing all the old clamps. I cant believe I spent well over 5 hours wrestling with the old boots. My new fuel line should be here soon and then it will be time to try and start her up. I`m excited !!! Any tips or hints on the initial start up ? Thanks guys for all your help, this forum is great..........Gary

so awesome Gary, night and day from the old rubber. glad you got the new boots. I remember still not being satisfied with the snugness/fitment of the airbox boots though and I got new ones. it had to do with the angledness of the airbox boots. of course I never checked if it WAS leaking by spraying anything, I was just too excited to actually get it started. I;m sure when I get things buttoned back up and fit them on again I'll encounter the same issue but hopefully can get a resolve. keep it up man, can't wait to see that thing fire. MAKE SURE YOU take video and post it!

Well here we go again..........Point gap is right static timing is right but i only get it to  fire occasionally on one or two cylinders. I can put my hand over the intake of the carb and turn it over and get fuel sucked out on all but number one cylinder, Iwas hoping to get by without rebuilding my carbs but now I`m not so sure. I havent gave up but my tournament season starts in about three weeks and thats gonna cut into my time but much more into my cash...........gary

Did you try a shot of starting fluid in each in the carb intakes  and then try to start?  That should tell for sure if you have a fuel supply/carb problem.

The carbs are the heart and soul of a great running bike. Don't cut corners and git 'er done. You will be glad you did. Not really a difficult job at all. Especially with the help from this board. Good luck and let us know how you come out.

Well I can make her run, but only with the choke pulled all the way. Dang I forgot how good they sound!!! Definitely gonna have to rebuilld the carbs. I`m not comfortable doing it myself so they will be off to SOHCdigger early next week. Found a nasty oil leak in one of the oil lines that will have to be replaced. Also have ordered new dust boots for the carbs from Service Honda. Man I`ve still got a long list of things I need. Throttle cables, Speedo and tach cables, Rear wheel bearings, brake shoes and maybe the dampers. I did manage to get a good deal on some high density foam from a local upholstery shop $3.00 also the guy gave me directions on how to cut and shaoe the foam. So I`ll have enough to keep me busy until my carbs come back. Bass tournament in 10 days be nice to win and take the prize money to fund my project........Gary

I did fish The BFL circuit which is part of the FLW trail but unfortunately when I retired I had to give up the Pro tournaments. I have fished for the big money and won some decent money. But now i just fish some local tournaments and club tournaments. I`m not familiar with the reality show your talking about....Gary

very awesome gary! that thing sounds MEAN! so jealous man all this mucking around I am doing and now I am at a crossroads with the engine. I think I am going to opt out of going through it and take my chances and maybe in a year when it breaks down I'll have no choice but to go through it. I'm starting to itch to have it finished. on the plus side my paint is on the way so tomorrow will be spent stripping the tank and prepping all things to be painted.

can't wait to see the rest of yours come together!
