Parts came in from Service Honda yesterday. So I could determine whether it was the points, condensers or plug caps. Because it was the easiest I put the plug caps on first. Cranked her up, warmed the engine up and steady smooth idle. Let her warm up for a few minutes took her for about a five mile ride and no more skipping under load. Man did that feel good !!! I`m going to put the new points plate assembly in tommorow Just because I have it and wont have to worry about it failing while I am on the rode. Now I can concentrate on the paint and body work. Thanks to all of you guys and the help provided. I`m so glad I stumbled across this forum. Any suggestion on color?............Gary

Great news.   How 'bout something differant: silver metallic tank and covers?

It was a CB750 color, but only available overseas.

Like this?

I would choose black stripes though.

Sorry I havent posted in awhile been rideing. I like the silver and black but I`m leaning more ti red with gold stripes. Thats the color mine was when i I bought it in 1971.

Charging system problem; I put about thirty miles on it parked it in the garage went out later to ride some more and when I went to start it the starter was very sluggish. Oh no!!! Charging system woes. I know its supposed to put 14.5 volts at 5000 rpms. Freshly charged batterey set for two hours showing 13.07 volts. After kick starting reads 12.28 at idle, 12.28 @ 2000rpms, 12.30 @ 3000 rpms, 12.32 @4000 rpms 12.33 @5000 rpms. I`ve tried a jumper between the black and white wire at the voltage regulator with the same readings on my multimeter. Does this indicate a bad voltage regulator ? I`ve take it apart and the points dont show any pitting and the gaps are good.  Any Ideas................Gary

Okay so now I really feel stupid. I`ve spent almost all day yesterday and most of today the pouring over archived files, searching for testing procedures,  testing and cleaning the voltage regulator, testing the rectifier, cleaning all the connections that were easy to get to. Still couldnt find the problem. So then I pull the sprocket cover off and I find one wire that had pulled loose. Reconnected it and presto chango I`m charging. Now we hook the multi meter up and at the batterey @ 5000 rpms its climbs to 16.5 yikes !!! then drops to 14.5 and then jumps back and forth between 14.5 and 16.5 hmm is this normal ?.......Gary

Don't you love it when it's something like that? I haven't checked if mine is jumping like that. I'll report back when I can. I do k ow that yesterday after 2 hours of riding through the neighborhood mine developed a stutter up to 3000 rpms and then is fine. Not sure of its fuel delivery, dirty gas clogging carbs, timing or tappets (neither of which I've adjusted)  or even running too rich and fouling plugs. I have a lot to work on now good luck Gary. I'm coming for you soon!

Sounds like your regulator needs adjusted or the reference voltage wire has higher resistance than it should.

wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_regulator

Check out the bit on electromechanical regulators. That's what we have I believe. The "sensing wire" as they call it is the reference wire I was referring to. If the resistance in this wire or any of the connections in it are too high then it will mess up at what points your regulator opens and closes... IE your charging voltage.

Sorry I havent posted in awhile but I`ve been spending time riding . I figured ouit that with my headlite on the voltage is fine so rather than attempting to adjust the regulator I would just leave the headlite on. Still havent got an air compressor so the paint work is on hold for now.............Gary

I`m back. I havent posted an update for awhile simply because I`ve been to busy riding, camping and fishing. I have borrowed an air compressor from a neighbor its small but it will do the job. First up are the psychedelic side covers I bought from a forum member. All the paint and red oxide primer will have to come off and I will need to repair some cracks with fiberglass cloth and resign. The paint would take forever to sand off but whoever did the paint work (probably in the late 70s) used red oxide primer which as it gets older tends to let go the adhesion between the primer and paint so I was able to take a razor blade and carefully flake the paint off. Picture number three has been sanded down picture number four hasnt. I really hate to start on the tank because when I do I wont be able to ride.......Gary

Nice, did you decide on the color scheme?

Did you see the K1 ears for sale on eBay for like 125 bucks? They look really nice

That would suck to have the bike down.  Do you know anyone with a spare tank?  I have a spare that needs cleaning,  I think it is maybe a k3 or K4.  I could lend it to you, but I will not be home again until August.

Ran into an unexpected problem changing the oil. Dropped the drain plugin the oil pan and it only drained the crankcase the oil tank wouldnt drain. It took a long time kicking it over to pump the oil into the crankcase where it would drain. Anyone else experience this ?..............Gary
