Don't want to start an oil debate, but...
« on: August 20, 2012, 03:27:15 PM »
I currently have walmart's "supertech" 20w50 oil in my bike. I read it doesn't have the friction modifiers that cause clutch problems like most other car oils do since it's so cheap. I have not had any problems with my clutch slipping or anything else. My clutch is pretty wore out too. Anyways I'm probably 150-200 miles into the break in and it's time to change the oil and filter for the first time. Is there REALLY any good reason that I should spend 4 or 5 times the money on some "motorcycle oil"? This oil has gotten dark brown pretty quick but my bike was running ultra rich at the beginning actually bad enough that I fouled some brand new plugs. So I'm going to say it's from that.

These bikes were built in the era when dinosaurs were still walking the earth and dino oil could be had for 50 cents a quart.  No need for super duper motorcycle oil.  I, myself, use Rotella T which I purchase in gallon jugs.

Yeah I hear ya. I went ahead and bought another 5 quarts of the supertech. Wow for maybe the 200 miles I put on this bike the oil I just drained out looks pretty used up! Very dark. Can't blame that on the oil though. Just some richness

I'm relieved to not find any metal bits in the oil or anything alarming. Some cat hair in the oil filter though I did anticipate that as there were some pussies around the motor when it was apart for the rebuild

But You will.  LOL  Many years ago when I drove truck for a fuel co we used to deal with bulk oil. As in 1000 gallons plus.  Where I picked it up at was the blender.  talked to the foreman there and he said the only problem with no name oils (superteck is walyworld brand right?) is it can be anybrand.  When they filled a order for a major brand the left over went to the store brand.  So one time u get store brand it might be pennzoil and next might be valvoline.
My major issue with oil is pick a BRAND and stay with it.  Every one has their chemicals and additives. Some might not be compatible with other brands.

18 grand and 18 miles dont make you a biker

I believe that. Oh well we will see. I personally think it's hard to make the clutch slip on a cb750 there's just not that much power. If I have any problems I'll let ya know
