1977 CB750 Oil Filter removal
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:28:24 AM »
I am recieving an oil filter in the mail pretty soon and have never changed one before. It seems pretty straight forward.
I was wondering if I should expect some oil to come out as I loosen the cover of the oil filter case. I did unscrew the cover of the case a little bit this weekend and oil did start to pour out.

thanks
Wil

Yes, you wil need a catch pan underneath. You'll get about 1/2 cup, enough to make a real mess.. Depending on the pipe you have, i slide a wedge of cardboard underneath to catch the oil and channel it forward away from the pipes to the catch pan. Otherwise it will spill all over the pipes.

+1 on the cardboard as a funnel. Otherwise you'll smoke yourself out with burning oil off of the headers.

Yeah I noticed that after a short ride this weekend. I was seeing smoke and verified that is was coming from the oil left over. Thanks for the input

I 've found the catch pan with some window screen covering useful for this. It catches the thin washer folks are always losing, plus it gives you chance to observe if there any other metal bits being shed.

I use aluminum foil rather than cardboard. I can easily form it over the pipes keeping them clean.

Ah yes, the thin washer. Besides possibly dropping off, it often sticks to the old filter and is thrown away with it.

OP, be aware of this.

I highly recommend that you buy a Clymer's workshop manual so you can work on your bike.

Use an empty paper towel cardboard roll to dump the oil from the oil tank into your waste oil pan (now THATS a good tip!) 8)

I like the foil idea, I'll give that a shot.

I use card board to transfer the flow and old gallon oil jug to drain the oil tank.

Nice one. Since I didn't think of that, I flipped over an empty plastic 2 liter, and cut the bottom off keeping half the "rounded" folds at the bottom, one of which fits in nicely back under the oil tank drain bolt.
 Didn't spill a drop.
