Battery acid leaked on my chrome... Suggestions?
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:42:50 AM »
Back when GZ was here and we were careening through AZ and NM, my battery vent shifted to right over top of my right side pipe and dribbled some acid on it.  Aside from the trippy trails it now leaves  ;D  it looks like crap.  I'd like to see if I can get the chrome back.

What's worked for you?

it wont come back the only option is to get new or rechrome.same thing happened on my side pipes just the right side my bestfriends brother inlaw said either strip the other side to match or have the bad one rechromed.(he works at one of the biggest chrome shops here in the midwest) so i had him strip it down i like it the looks of it.

My bike had that when I got it, I took the muffler off and took it to my bench buffer and buffed the #$%* out of it....didnt take it all the way out but def less noticeable..

Yeah, u may be able to buff a little depending on the depth of the damage but if you ever see chrome peeling you will realize just how thinner-than-paper it is. It's already damaged so if you buff through the layer it will still be damaged. What do you have to lose in this scenario! Not likely you could find a new one either. Rechroming will make it look so much better than it was AND so much better than any other chrome you have too. No perfect scenario bro  :'(

Get a AGM next battery. Say hello to Eliz. Hope you guys are doing well.

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I have seen this situation all through the years and it happened to me also.  I decided to run the over flow tube into a small plastic bottle mounted below the battery. problem solved.   ;)    As for the damaged chrome..... good luck.   :'(

I also discovered the reason for the battery overflow line recently.  Luckily I have a somewhat inexpensive aftermarket 4 into 1.  Still ticks me off though since the pipe was the newest shiniest thing on the bike except for the new mirrors.
