Removing new rear wheel bearings and re-installing in new hub
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:58:12 PM »
I wanted to see if anyone has had to remove a new set of wheel bearings right after installing them.  I installed a new set of All Balls Rear Wheel bearings into the rear hub of my 76 550K.  I used the heat the hub/ freeze the bearings technique to drop them in.  When I went to re-install the bearing retainer I cross threaded the retainer on the hub and wrecked half the threads.  I'm in the process of locating another hub and would like to be able to re-use the new bearings I just installed.  If I heat up the wrecked hub and push out the new bearings, do you think the heating process is going to wreck the new bearings.  I used 300 degrees for 30 minutes and the old bearings dropped right out.

I'd be more worried that the banging out process will produce damage.Might be a good idea to start fresh.

Well, I did. Put a new set in my rear and had to pull one out to fix a mistake. You "tap" them in - so you "tap" them out. Once vs twice - I didn't see any huge risk. But - doubtless - the ideal and best solution is NEW parts again. I used the old bearing as a drift to install and remove the new bearings.

Use whatever tool you have to tap against the outer race.  Don't bang on the center or the inner race or you will likely do damage.

Thanks. I spoke with a guy at All Balls and he said the same thing.  Not to worry about the heat, worry about messing the bearing when tapping it out.  I figure I'll give it a try and if I get it out undamaged I'll use them again.
