1976 CB550K Simplified Wiring Harness Questions
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:52:27 PM »
Hey guys, I am trying to rebuild my wiring harness and going for the more simplified "bare-bones" idea. No turn lights, horn, gauges, switches, etc... I have attached a modified wiring diagram and I wanted to run it by the community to see what needs to be changed or altered. When I bought the bike, the switches had already been removed so the wiring was already modified. I am basically trying to start from scratch.

Keep in mind:
- I know the headlight doesn't have power going to it in the diagram. I have a fused line going directly to the battery with a switch.
- I do not have any handlebar switches
- This has a solid state regulator/rectifier
- It is kick-only

I am a relative newb to electrical, and am far more familiar with American car wiring, so I know I am kinda stepping in a little above my head on this one. If things need to be changed, no need to crucify me, just let me know and I can/will change it.

Why don't you remove the SSM as well? It's pretty useless now.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

That is basically as simple as you can get, yours would be even more simple due to the solid state rectifier-regulator and kickstart only.

If you're not worried about your bike getting stolen you can replace the keyed ignition switch with a toggle switch with always hot "red" going in and switched "black" coming out. You can get dead simple with these things but a scratch-built harness is probably going to be inferior to an OEM unless you're using OEM quality/style connectors and the wire. Between Dime City Cycles and oregonmotorcycleparts.com/you can build an OEM quality harness but it won't be as cheap as the Radio Shack / Autozone way.

True... Without that will I still be able to kick start it in gear with the clutch pulled in?

That is the diagram that I was looking for I just couldn't find it... I guess it would be the same considering the same basic components are used, but would it be the same setup on a 550?

Anything would be better than the stock harness that is currently on the bike. The wiring shorted at some point and bubbled and melted the wire casings, plus wires are very brittle and connectors are terrible.

As far as I remember you just connect the two wires that would normally feed that diode.

This the diagram for sohc4s from hondachopper.com its a easy harness to do. Its what i run and it has been real nice and its easy to add things to. This time im adding a indicator light for ignition on and one for bright headlight. And maybe going to add a 12v power outlet for a phone charger on the road.

I don't think you'll ever be able to kick start it in gear with the clutch pulled in whatever you do electrically.  ;)

I did what you're looking for and got rid of the ssm, starter mag switch, clutch op switch, neutral indicator, and the oil pressure indicator after getting a side mount needle gauge.  Oh ya, the emergency switch went away too.
