Dead 750k4 Help Plz!
« on: August 22, 2012, 01:07:43 PM »
I just got out of work and my 74 750 is completely dead. No lights or anything with the turn of the key.  The fuses look good, I keep spare 15 amp fuse with me and replaced it with no luck. She started right up this morning with no problems and didn't notice anything strange. My ground is well connected and clean.
I have been using this bike daily without any problems in weeks.
I'll have to wait for a ride home to grab some tools and check battery.
Any suggestions on what all I should check and go through? I do not want to leave my bike behind parked in the city...  :-\
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Bad ignition switch?
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Yes, try jiggling your ignition switch and see if you get power. These switches wear out over time.

How old is the battery? They can die that fast. Find a spare to take with you. Let us know what you find out. I hope someone did not disconnect a lead on you for a joke?

Battery is new beginning of this year. Ignition is about two years old so I do not suspect it going bad, but who knows. Im hoping for a simple fix right about now even if its a cruel joke.
Any other suggestions would be great, thanks again guys.

When I lost the key to mine I gave it power by crossing one of the other fuses to the main one, if you are stuck.

I had a 3 month old battery from Batteries Plus die. It showed volts but produced no amps. I was happy to receive a free replacement. Never bought another from there. I stay with the Yuasa now.

I just put a wire from one fuse to the other. I can't remember which but one will be the main fuse.

Battery is showing 12.6 volts, but worried could be what Johnie posted. Might have to take it out and get it checked out. Wish I had a spare to test against. If its not the battery and jiggling ignition doesn't work... anything else I can try?  ???

As I recall, the ignition switch is located under the tank and has 4 wires.  If that's correct, unplug  the ignition switch pigtail from the main harness.  Then, jumper the red wire to the black wire on the harness.  Do you he lights?

Being parked in the city I am limited to what I can do out there. I was going to have it towed but I started pushing it down hill with ignition in on position. Remind you that no lights or anything came on before, but while slowly pushing the lights came on and I was able to start her up!  :D
I just now got her home safe  ;D I turned ignition off and tried again. When turning the key the lights didn't come on again, so I tried again quickly and the lights lit up. I've tries another dozen times and lights up now.
Am I safe to say that my ignition switch could be going bad?
Thanks again everyone for the help I was scarred leaving my any out in the city streets!

I wouldn't trust that key switch.  You mentioned that it was replaced 2 years ago.  Emgo, by chance?

Oh, and glad to hear you got 'er home safe!!

Tested the battery and came out good. I have been trying to reproduce what happened yesterday a good dozen + times, but has been turning on like normal.
I took a risk and drove her into work, i just cant let her sit with such a beautiful 80 degree day out. Crossing my fingers thought  ;)
Everything seems to be pointing to a bad ignition switch.  I have noticed that the key has been harder to insert and pull out of the ignition switch, maybe some innards are going bad ???
it is a cheap Emgo... do you guys have any recommendations for a better ignition switch that wont break the bank? < $70

Factor in what it would have cost you for that tow yesterday and I bet $70 starts to sound like a bargain!

But yea, there prolly is an option somewhere between Emgo and OEM.
