Bore sizes and Pistons
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:15:42 PM »
Hi guys, I am rebuilding the engine on my '78 CB550k. I have everything down to the cylinder block taken off, I would like to take it to a machine shop and get it overbored one size to make sure everything is strait and true. Do I need to buy new pistons to fit the new bore size? If so, should I bore it over more than just one size for any reason? Also, where would I buy new pistons to fit?
It's almost twice as old as me, I don't know how the hell it works!

This is your best bet

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB550F-CB550K-600cc-Bigbore-Piston-Kits-with-Head-Gasket-CB550FBB-/160775419335?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item256ef635c7&vxp=mtr#ht_1235wt_964

You always get your pistons first then take them with the jug to have it bored.  Most shops will Fit pistons to the cylinders and label them for you.

Thank you for the reply! $120 is not a bad price for 50 extra cc. I will most likely be ordering this.

be aware that with that size over bore you wont be able to rebore that barrel again, itll need new sleeves, also the taper that helps you install the pistons and rings will be minimal which can make install a little tricky.
