This made my day
« on: June 23, 2006, 10:12:32 PM »
When I stopped for gas this morning, I pulled up next to a super nice early 'Vette convertible. It was a burnt orange color, all the chrome was polished, it looked perfect in every way. I started to put gas in the bike and I hear someone say "Hey, what year is that, about a 77?". I started thinking, hmm, the Vette has chrome bumpers, so it's gotta be a lot earlier than that....I looked over at the guy gassing up the Vette and he looked heartbroken. A couple of guys were asking me about my bike, not his car! We b.s.'d a bit about my bike, where I got it, what I did to it, how's it run, etc. Nobody looked twice at Vette. Probably the first time that ever happend to him. My bike isn't a show piece, but it's mine and I take great pride in it. The nice comments made my day.

And then I got all green lights on the way to work :) What a morning!

I had something similar like that happen when I picked up my bike from from up North (Grantsburg, WI). On the 7 hr drive home, at one of the many gas stations we stopped at, a small crowd ended up gathering around my bike and just admiring it.  Made me feel like I had a small piece of everyone's childhood (well, motorcycle childhood) on that trailer.  And now that I've been out riding, I love the looks and smiles that simply seem to reminisce about such a bike.

Cool!

I also got lots of comments on my '76 cb550, especially by riders of "non-chromed bikes", ie, zoom-splats and heavily plasticed bikers on my way to the Loudon races (never made it). No one noticed I have the wrong year pipes on it though. :-\

Hey, them 'Vettes are a dime a dozen. ;D ;D

Just wish I had a dozen.

I often get more positive attention than the folks on modern bikes. The other day I was gassing up next to a guy on a brand new metric cruiser, the bike all covered with bling from the catalogs and the guy himself wearing leather chaps and -- seriously -- spurs.

A couple of other fellows came over and started chatting about bikes with me. I swear the cruiser guy was barely restraining himself from jumping up and down and shouting "But look at me! Me!"

It's interesting too, when you see another sohc while riding. I almost always get pulled over for
roadside conversation. Congrats for stealing the show. Vettes are very cool, but so are our
SOHCs :)

i love the CB... she gets more attentions in a day than any of my other 'modern' bikes will get in a life time..... it was on one of those occasions that i meet my now best mate.... he rides an SP2 and parked it on the other side of the road, b/c he didnt want to be next to the F1 and noone pay attention to his bike!!!, then he sat at another table!!!... so i gave him a verbal serve( good naturedly of course), and have been good friends ever since.... they older they are, the more ppl what to just stare.... BTW keep young children away from air cooled motors, especially when you have been rideing for an hour and just pull up,.... all i heard was sssss daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!!, then had the young blokes old man yellin at me for not warning him my bike was hot!!!!   i just said it was easy.... dont touch it, dont get burned......   mind you there were alot of other bikers there... :P.... ooooops, think that might have been a tangent.... 8)..peace
you are never to old, to act like a kid... be safe
funny thing, chasing someone down hill on a bike 30 years older than theirs..

Make no mistake though... I'd trade my 550 for any Corvette, any day.

I would have traded 10 of my bikes for this Corevette. I can always get another 550 and do it again!

Same here, i pulled up to a favorite hot spot downtown portland, its actually a cool place for MC's, Kellys Olympian...its like a MC museum that serves food and beer, is smack downtown but has MC parking right in front. I pulled my bike in a slot next to about 5 new harleys, everyone came over to look at my bike. Another fun past time is to ride past a local rice burner hang out, they all get together on Sat nights here at the local starbucks, about 25 of those new jap bikes, there the guys stand with thier matching helmets and pants, and here i come with my 74 honda. I just like to drive past them all, they all stop talking and are quiet as i pull up to the stop sign there, they all have a puzzled look on thier face as i speed up and go by waving to them all.

Yes! I love to do the same thing here at the shore in new jersey. Theres this Wawa (conenience store) a few blocks down from my house and late every night its just packed with all the cool kids with their modern sport bikes, the kids with their cool rice-burners (honda civics, nissan z's, etc.) and all the cool middle aged credit card bikes with their harleys and other v-twin chrome cruisers. One of my favorite hobbies is to come up with my 350 and park right in the middle of everyone. That sort of silence thing happens the entire time i'm there!

Hey Guys,

I guess it happens to all of us.  Last year, after I decided to sell my 99 Honda ACE 750 and keep my 1972 CB500, people called me crazy.

They all asked, " why not sell the old bike?"  Now they know, because everywhere I go, I get all the attention.  People just come up to me and start asking about the bike, just out of the blue.

My bike is not a show bike in any way but I think people just like reminiscing.  You can just tell by their face that they are having a flashback to the early 70's.

That has happened to me many times...Shortly after getting my bike (after not riding for 15 years), a friend took me to my first real "Biker Bar"...the kind of place thet has a "No Colors" sign on the door...back then, it was a pretty serious place (now, it's become a yuppie hangout, where yuppies go slumming)...anyway, there was a whole table of pretty rough looking people attached to the long string of bikes outside...this was a pretty much Harley type of place, so when they got up to leave, I felt a little squirrely having my little 750 parked in formation next to theirs....they went out, but we heard no engines...all of a sudden, my friend said "They're all standing around your bike!"...it was true, they were going over it with a fine toothed comb...and this was before I had it painted!
The best one happened a few weeks ago...now, to preface, I'm in my early 50s, gray hair and a graying mustache...I'm also kind of portly...and single...I'm working on that "Cute old guy" look, and I just found a great set of really retro looking goggles that I like because I can turn my head @ 70 and they don't fly off! Anyway, I was riding along, and here's this middle aged woman (kinda cute..it's scarry, older women look kind of good to me now) out for a walk with her friend was standing on the sidewalk, jumping up and down (fun in itself) giving me thumbs up and waving... I don't know if she was responding to the bike, or me, or the goggles, or the ensemble, but it was fun just the same!

It's great that our bikes are turning some heads. The old sporty bodies and four-across look is just a brilliant and beautiful thing. Some of the new stuff is kind of monotonous.

I know that whenever I go somewhere, I need to allow a few minutes to answer questions or BS with people whenever I park, or return to my bike.

At work, there is a motorcycle parking area and only a few guys have bikes, so we all know each other.  If everyone rides on a given day, the lot'll have:

2 Harley 883 Sportsters
1 Honda CBR600RR
1 Suzuki Katana 650
1 Kawasaki Cruiser
1 Yamaha YZF-R6
My CB400F

It never fails, if there is another rider there, he wants to know about my bike, even if he's already seen it.  People walking by stop and talk to me EVERY time.  Want to know about the bike, etc.

Every time I get gas, I have to talk to someone.  Going to a store is nearly the same.

You meet the nicest people on a Honda.  ;D

The other day a tri-met bus driver stopped his bus in the middle of downtown portland to get out and talk to me about my bike, he didnt have any passengers, but he still pulled his huge bus up in downtown portland, illegally parked it put on his flashers and came over, i thought there was something wrong until he came over and said he had a 78 cb750, bought it brand new in 78, he was in his 50's and boy did he have stories.....he wound up leaving only after a cop pulled up to see what the problem was ha ha.

It's like I told Glenn at the Berkeley Meet....My first hard on for a Honda 750....sitting on it and seeing the motor hanging out on both sides of the gas tank and the way the pipes wrap around the down tubes of the frame.Man.....that is just totally the #$%*!!!!! Maybe thats why people flock around them and don't pay attention to the common stock thats parked next to it.......Uhhhh Huuhhhh!!!!!!!

So, I've had the bike out for going on 4 days now, and EVERY DAY I meet someone because of it. Today a bit earlier than usual - on my way to work at 7:30 I get passed up by an old feller with a long white beard, so I zip around the cage in front and chase him down - he's on a K5 and we chatted for three stop lights - He's online but hadn't heard of the club, so I'm gonna go see him, he works at Napa where I just got my zerks the other day, and give him the story - his names "Doc"...
