Old Helmets, they look cool but should people wear them?
« on: June 27, 2006, 11:16:49 PM »
okay so i got a really sweet helmet, it is from the 70's. one of those sparkle 3/4 helmets. Question, is it complete insanity to wear something like that while riding? A 30 year old helmet....looks okay on the outside, but cmon its 30 years old its bound to have been dropped multiple times. i know its not as good or nearly half as good as one you can buy these days..but dammit the thing is cool and looks great while riding my vintage bike.....i dont want to wear it if it is basically like wearing nothing at all, or even worse...worse then wearing nothing at all. Anyone have any input into this?

my concerns would be if the padding fits correctly if its a used helmet.
I also remember reading somewhere about the life of a helmet and after so many years its not so great of an idea...

I dont think it would be WORSE then no helmet but it might be about the same.  as you said it obviously wont compare to brand new top of the line helmets as the technology has come a LONG way.

I personally wouldn't wear it but I'm a huge nut when it comes to protective gear.

I had the same problem until my son wanted to show me some pics he sourced off the 'net of guys faces, ones who weren't using a full face helmet.

Old jet style is just not worth the risk, I think.

You could lose your pretty face or at worst die or at second worse have your 'significant other' wiping your a*se for the next how many years because you are in a really, really bad state.

A bit of a gloomy post but IMO you should always go safety first. You could always just buy the helmet but leave it on a shelf next to your bike, along with some old posters and other related stuff, like I do.    ....Good luck..  TC

You might ask instead, "...should I wear one?"
IMO gear is a personal choice and depends on what, how, when, and where one happens to be riding.
I am not going to wear full leathers bopping around town at a leisurely pace.
I am not going to push hard through the mountains or hit the freeway(which around here averages 75-80 mph) without them.

It would probably be alright for abrasion and sliding and better than nothing in an impact, but of course, not as good in an impact or slide as a super-duper expensive Arai or Shoei.

My daily wear is an Old-Style Davida Classic.  Meets no Safety Standards anywhere in the world.  However, it's the most comfortable helmet I own and its construction is top-notch.  Would do well in a slide, but only so-so in any kind of impact.  Having said that, 90% of my riding is bopping to and from work and around town where speeds are low, I live in a rural area with nearly no traffic and few cars, and I'm a gambler that's playing the game that say that statistically, most motorcycle crashes involve some sort of slide while very very few involve an impact with a unyielding object.  However, if the object or impact is hard enough to f--k me up past that layer of fiberglass, cork, air-space and canvas webbing, then the impact would still jack my spine just as bad as wearing a gee-whiz wonder helmet.

Would I like to have a 700 dollar Arai and Kevlar armor coming out my ass?  Sure, but I, 1: can't afford it, and 2: it's hot as HELL here 6 months of the year and all that armor and clothing would SUCK to wear.  Big issue: I'm not going to dress up like an astronaut for a trip to the movies since I don't like walking around looking like a damn Power Ranger and part of these old bikes to me is the proper look.  Armored jeans, Rocker jacket, Pudding Bowl helmet, flight gloves and Jungle Boots or over-the-ankle Classic sneakers, FOR ME, are the right look, and they give me the protection I will need considering my riding location and style.

However, I do have a traditional 3/4 helmet and a full-face (though not a big $$$$ one) for different occasions.

I don't buy that unless your stuff is new or full-face or DOT/Snell or whatever approved that it's akin to wrapping your head in tissue paper.  So all the GP racers who wore the Low-Dome helmets were dumb#$%*s who were wrapping thier head with little more than a towel?  All the riders up till now that wore the helmets in the 70s and such were not protected?  Of course not.  Has the technology improved?  OF COURSE, but older helmets are not as useless as people make them out to be.

So yes, I have no problem with old-style gear.  Old gear, OTOH, should be checked for safety and life left, but if it checks out, go for it.  New stuff made to an older style, I have no problem with.

I think if you look at the Steve McQueen movie "On Any Sunday" (for an example) where they show actual race movie footage from the mid-70s of guys falling on a track (and yes track is different from a road where you have many more objects to consider) wearing the 70s technology gear - leathers and open face helmet, this will give you a better idea of how an open face helmet may hold up on crashing. Unless you see such footage or simillar crash photos of motorcylists wearing open face helmets or hear from people who have crashed (wearing an open face) then the rest is just an opinion and preference - both of which you should decide for yourself (based of course on all of the preceeding info). Your head, your choice.

P.S. If you wear a full face helmet and a t-shirt (or shorts!) are you really any better off?

In a word ....... NO

Do a search on this forum regarding helmets.

DO read the cycle world articule regarding expensive vs cheap helmets. The result is suprising

The polystyrene used in your helmets construction will degrade over time and with use. You are correct that it will not be up to par in an impact situation.

You are correct that it will be useless in face protection.

My brother-in-law is a firefighter/EMT and I recently spoke with him about this exact topic. I was curious myself, as I saw all these riders with these "vintage" helmets riding around..

He said, with a helment that old, in the event of a crash will prob. do MORE damage to your head than not wearing anything at all. He told me about a kid who crashed his HD while wearing some cheap Internet "german style" helmet, and they had to surgically remove broken pieces of the plastic helmet from his head & neck... :o

Kinda once of those "do it if you want to" things I guess....

That's not bad!  I thought the USD was doing a lot worse than that compared to the Euro.

Amen, brother. It's a motorcycle. It's not safe.

An old and/or non-approved helmet is probably not as safe as a new fullface DOT helmet.

Blue jeans are not as safe as leathers.

Plain jackets are not as safe as armored jackets.

Engineer boots are not as safe as racing boots.

Work gloves are not as safe as kevlar riding gloves.

IMO, we all decide how much convenience/comfort/appearance/cost we are willing to trade for safety. Few of us dress up in full armored leathers with back protector and full face helmet every time we ride. Which technically leaves us open to criticism from people who feel we haven't met their particular standards for safety. For instance, I have a friend that's an absolute nazi on the subject of helmets. He feels that anyone who doesn't wear a $700 full face helmet on every single ride is a moron, and he'll tell you so. But we rode down to the local Starbucks once and a mutual acquaintance gave him hell for wearing an unpadded "biker" style jacket rather than his usual Power Ranger number. Kind of "outsafetied" him, which amused me no end.

And to be perfectly honest, I get a bit self-righteous when I see the 17 year old crotch rocketeers riding around in t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops. I probably sound exactly like the helmet nazis, sniffing and going on about "crazy fools gonna get themselves killed".

All of that is a long-winded way of saying "It's your world, mate. You make your choices, you take the consequences."
