Kawasaki cr29 vs cr29
« on: August 25, 2012, 02:58:44 PM »
Besides stuff like spigot size and jets is there anything that should make me not purchase cr29s meant for a Kawasaki for my 550?

I am not 100%, but the spacing on the tubes and parts between the carbs may be different.

It looks to me the like spacing is adjustable, and the bits that connect them (like vac pipes and throttle linkage) appear to have the ability to be differently spaced as well.  Not sure though.

They'll fit fine mate, but (and there's always a but) unless the spiggots can be modified to fit your application, be aware that new spiggots aren't cheap (around 60 bucks apiece from Sudco, from memory) so unless those carbs are going for really cheap, you might be better off buying a new set for your 550. Also, 29mm CR's will be way too big for a 550. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks for the info.  I was hoping there was enough meat on the spigots to turn them down in a lathe.  $240 for new spigots is certainly out of the question.

Are cr29s too large for a 550 if it is ported with 61mm pistons and hot cam?

Yep, 29's are way too big for your 550, you'd be better off with some 26's. Cheers, Terry. ;D

That's too bad.  Used 29s are a lot easier to find than used 26s.

Don't worry about CR's mate, install CB750 carbs, even though they're listed as 28mm, it's "poetic license" on Honda's part. The CR's bores are round, so if they're listed as 29mm, it means that you can measure them from any angle and they'll be 29mm.

Honda CB750 carbs bore's are oval shaped, so while they're 28mm high, they're only around 24mm wide. My maths is poor, but I think that makes them around 26mm, or close enough. Of course, if you want bigger, you can get them bored out, which was common back in the 1970's, but not so much now. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Well I have to say that my interest in CR is as much for 'show' as it is for 'go'.  It is a lot easier to make a modestly old set of carbs look nice when compared to a set from the 70s.

But I will keep my eyes open for a set of 750 carbs.  750F specifically I assume.

G'Day Mate, there's a thread here by a 550 guy who stretched his engine out to 720, or thereabouts. (not recommended) I haven't seen him much of late, but he used CB750 carbs and apparently they worked well.

The F2/3 carbs have accellerator pumps which is good, but are a little more difficult to tune, so I'd recommend early CB750 carbs, a set of K0 "4 cable" carbs would be very cool indeed, and have a much lighter spring than all the other SOHC4 carbs, so your bike will feel more responsive, straight away. Cheers, Terry. ;D
