Exhaust bent
« on: August 27, 2012, 12:28:08 PM »
I have a four into four exhaust, the rh side lower pipe is too low. It appears that it has a slight kink upwards in the middle, which has the effect of dropping the end down by over an inch.

The question is, if I remove the pipe, can I heat the pipe with a blow torchand straighten it without damaging the chrome, or should I take it to someone who knows what they are doing?

I have just considered trying to bend it cold, but I think we all know where that will leave me.

Bending pipe around is not trivial, especially if you want to preserve the chrome.  It takes  the right tool and skill set.  If it was me and I wanted to come out is good shape, I would have it done by someone who knows exactly what to do.  But then again, if it was me I wouldn't care if it came out a little bruised looking so I'd probably bend it back with a mild torch.  Any pics?

I would think the amount of heat required to make the pipe malleable would be more than enough to cause the chrome to crack or flake, or at the minimum turn very blue.  If it were me I think I would mark where the pipe needed straightening out and make a template for how many degrees of straightening was needed then take the bent pipe to a professional muffler shop and have it bent cold in the proper direction with a mandrel bender to keep from kinking the pipe.  The template can be just a piece of brazing rod (or even all thread) bent to the angle you want the pipe to be bent to.  Something for the tech to follow.  And supervise the bending.  Don't leave it for them to do later.
