I have three black wires with green and brown markings. I assume this means match to brown and green?

Does not sound like a good assumption to me.  You need the correct diagram for your bike.  What bike/year?

I have a wiring diagram, but it doesn't show a black wire with a touch of green and brown. 76 cb750

That one on the left has a yellow sleeve?
The PO for my bike replaced a few wires with black ones and did something like that to denote the color of wire replaced.

Didn't do it to all the off-color wires they replaced though  :P

That was what I was thinking happened here I read somewhere that the wiring harnesses on the 76 were pieced together with whatever wire they had at the factory since things changed a lot the next year.
