1974 550 harness attempt
« on: August 27, 2012, 12:33:27 PM »
So, Im still scouring the forums here, I've got a copy of every simple diagram I can find, but having #$%* luck.  This is what Im working with thus far, unfortunately nothing but the rear running light is coming on.  Any experts on the subject got some pointers?

Thanks for any grey matter you can lend!

Chris

It would seem that your Brown "Switched Hot" is coming on but not your Black 'Switched Hot." Could be the key switch. Also looks like you got Red/White "Always Hot" missing from the rectifier.

If you're not already you should get familiar with a multi meter.  The cheap ones are about $5.  Watch a few youtube videos, then start trouble-shooting.  What are you saying about the wiring diagrams?  That you don't understand them or can't find a good one?

Thanks for the response so far gentleman.  As far as the diagrams go I have found good ones, none so far that have been specific to my model and setup.  Im trying to pick from 750 diagrams and others to put something together that will suit my setup, headlight, taillight, start button… but so far no good.

So you've seen all the diagrams that come up when you google "simplified cb750 wiring diagram" and the like?  The colors will be different but the idea is the same.  If you're starting from scratch, or close to, I would do the following:

1 - Forget about the lights (brown key switch wire) and do just the charging and ignition (black key switch wire).

a - try to get a spark

b - try to get it to start so you can test your rectifier and then your regulator

2 - work on the lights

remember that the meter can be a lifesaver in this process...

I had a very similar issue with my 75 CB550K1 this spring.  Turned out to be a bad winker relay   Lucky for me it only cost $4.50 purchase a new 12V winker relay at the local autoparts store.  Low and behold.....my winkers lit right up after installing the new relay.  Wish you the best going forward.  Subscribed! round dice has it right don't worry about lights yet those are very easy. get your rec/reg hooked up your solenoid and key switch. are you doing a simple wire job like the choppers if so it's easy take your time but start with the most important first. lights are the simplest and can be done last.that's what toggle switches are for depending on your build.

your missing the red wire coming off the rectifer key swith red wire
headlight like mentioned dont use the br/w or the brown
starting at the headlight white wire to one side of on off switch other side to blk ignition- blk ignition to blk wire on key- blk/white wires on coils to blk- regulator black tied into blk -blk to brake switch wirepigail off  an thena straight shot blk wire to running light
red wire from key back to red rectifer wire then to positive side of starter relay with battery +
other side of relay to starter
battery ground green regulator ground green recitifer ground 3y's to stator y's white stator to white
an for the headlight if you want on/off an also low/hi beam will need to run a 3 position switch or two on/off switches

another thing you forgot are fuses.
so you could run a inline fuse after blk wire coming from headlight
before coils
" brake light switch
" running light
an key red then a fuse back to starter silenoid relay- thats all I use
also your push button setup doesnt look right y/r to ground blk to one side of push button an other side to blk ignition
good luck

sorry last thing if your using a after market master cylinder you either need to get one with wires or you will need to get a pressure regulated banjo bolt If you want the brake light to work when you use the front brake
if you do either one. one wire will get tied to the blk an the other wire will get ran back to the brake light switch thing with the 2 wires
