Is it my points again?

I recently replaced my points/condensers. Sadly, they were Daiichi (made in Japan, not China), even though they were being sold by some other company (forgot which atm).

When gapping and timing them, I had to advance it nearly all the way to get it dialed in. I know that was an issue confirmed by HondaMan with the Chinese points, but I haven't heard anything about the Japanese points.

At first they were performing adequately. Only problem was ill-tuned carbs. Rode about 100 miles with them no problems. Well, on a ride yesterday, I started getting bad throttle response at low RPMs; stumbling off idle, can't get a smooth ride at lower throttle positions, and eventually started popping and farting and backfiring at WOT. Those were the same issues I had with my old points when they were gapped wrong and eventually just plain worn out.

I haven't been outside to check anything yet, and probably won't until later this afternoon.

I know someone is going to suggest electronic ignition. I don't have $300+ to spend on that right now, unless someone would like to sell me a used one.

Dimitri ; Folks here will probably tell you to find TEC points. I'll probably get flamed for this but screw those 200/300 $$ electronic ignitions. Get a quality set of points (TEC) and if you want electric ignition get a "HondaMan" ignition. It keeps your points but only to trigger the ignition and if it Ever fails (so far I've only heard of 1 failing) just unplug it and plug you stock back in. Couple of minutes even on a hot motor and your back on the road. Not sure of the current price but one Hell of a repair/replacement gaurentee. Here is a link to his ignition thread, http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=67543.0 . Hope this helps.   ...cougar...

I know that Toyo/TEC is the brand to get, but where do I get them? I know Honda sells them at about $100 a set...

I go to the local Honda (car dealership)  I don't have a Honda bike dealer near me.
I give them the correct part number, they will not look up bike part numbers.
I am responsible for getting the part number correct.  They will not take the parts back.
I pay them.
2 days later I have my new points.  (60 dollars for a set of TEC) here in Canada

+1 on the Hondaman ignition. Super simple to revert back as needed. Great price and he responds immediately with questions or concerns.

I got mine on Ebay. Just make certain that when you look at the picture it says TEC on the plate.  You can see it clearly.  At my dealer it was $90 (it will say Toyo on their computer screen).  On Ebay I got mine for $70 shipped

+2 for Hondaman's ignition module. However, it will not cure a faulty set of points. I have Daichi points - made in Japan - and Hondaman's ignition. On one occasion I came home running on two cylinders - very embarassing. The problem was a lose rivet connection on one set of points. I suggest that you disconnect the blue and yellow wires from the points and check the resistance across the points when they are closed using a digital multi meter on the ohms scale. The reading you get should be almost zero. Turn the crankshaft slowly and the multi meter should indicate a clean break as the points open. In my case I was getting erratic readings of 10 to 50 ohms across one set while they were closed. These points were new. When I removed them I found a loose rivet connection at one end. Tightened it up - no more problem. Pat
