Parts interchangeability between CB500->CB550->CB750
« on: August 28, 2012, 08:13:27 AM »
As I look for parts for my 73' CB500, I'm curious about what parts from larger bikes may fit.  Specifically, would an original 4 into 4 exhaust, seat, or fenders from a 750 fit the 500?  Were the frames different sizes that would prohibit this?

Cheers,
Jason

Exhaust will not fit.. spacing is different. Seat will not fit either.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Carbs from the 550 and 500 interchange as well as exhaust and fenders. Frame do if you add a bracket i beleive. Wheels and front ends aslso do between the 500 to 550. Fork tubes and wheels from the 750 but arnt a perfect match. And the rec and reg  cross between all three. Im sure theres more.

There's a difference between which parts were used by Honda on different models and which parts will fit different models. Try this site to determine if a particular part was used on other models. Grab the part number from the left box and use it in the right box.

I found some old articles that indicated the 750 head was 1 inch taller than the 500, and the 750 frame was longer.  It seemed a safe bet the exhaust wouldn't fit at that point.

Another article mentioned the front forks between the 500 and 750 were very close, but the fork angle is different I believe.

550 and 500 share many parts. Different clutch transmission and frame. 750 shares very very little with the other bikes.

Different clutch and trans for sure but not so sure about the frame. I had a 73 cb500 parts bike when putting my 75 cb550 together and I don't remember a difference between the frames.

500/550 frames depend on model.... F or K , the '78 is different than the rest.
500/550/650 engines fit in each others cradles without modifications.
650 pipes don't fit on the 500/550 engine
some wiring differences...pins ,blades, quick disconnect depending on year and model.
It'd just be easier if you tell us what you are trying to do.

Similar question as OP, I've been told that CB750 forks / wheels are the exact same as on the CB550 and so I can buy CB750 brakes and they will bolt straight onto my 1977 CB550F. Is this true? If so I was thinking of ordering this brake caliper and this drilled out rotor.  Should this work?

The difference between the 500/550/650 engine cradle and the 750 cradle is huge. i dont think you can shoehorn a 750 engine into the other frames without serious modifications. I haven't seen it done here yet, but have seen many other amazing things happen to the 550 platform to make it go faster, none of them include a 750 as the cylinder spacing is so wide and spaced out different . So much so that cylinders couldn't center on the lower cc's crankshaft and the studding on the 750 is expanded compared to the lower cc'd engine and lower cases. .. even if it could have worked, the cranks couldn't stand the up grade.
But could you be talking about maybe shoehorning a full 750 into a 500/550...that would be a feat. It would be a real ballbuster with a high probability of failure, but a successful transplant would start a new trend for sure.
I would watch that ,that would take a high skill level, take plenty of pictures.

Sounds like a trick question!

'77-78 750K uses the same caliper as the 550.

Never over-think an answer. The definitive answer is: Yes. Until he asks a different question.

Still wrong question. You want to ask: will a 750 wheel fit my 550? And the answer is: depends.

The early 750s shared the same axle, and most were also 18" rims, 40 spoke patterns. But, pretty quickly, the brake plates differed, the 750 moved towards 17" (post '76 I think) and then introduced a rear disc brake.

Best to explicitly describe what year 550 frame and what year 750 wheel you are trying to pair to it. Then, a solid answer can be given. Or, are you asking about using the rim only from a good 750 to replace a damaged 550 rim?

Dont over think it, Cal.  Yes, a 750 rim will fit on a 550, I plan to do it.

But, you'll have to relace the 550 hub with the 750 rim.

Yes, that would be true if he's using the rim only. I am a little low on my Clairvoyance Rx, but I am betting he wants use a donor wheel  ;)

I'm thinkin a 750k0-6 front wheel assy will fit the 550k0-2 without modifications.
only difference is rotor size, but......
The lower fork cases, (if they are 341 code) will interchange and will accept both 750
and 550 front brakes assys. whichever you choose. Need to verify for sure.
I know I've seen guys on here with 74-76 550s running early 750 front brakes.
The lower fork cases are stamped "341" on the inside edge of the fork case nearest the wheel.
