How often do you do it>
« on: August 30, 2012, 02:28:16 AM »
I'm pushing 60 and don't get to ride my K2 as often as I did when I was 20 and a K2 was my only transport. With the bike sitting in the shed with battery disconnected for monthsd at a time in winter, what is the ideal (time-wise) for me to start the bike? It was three weeks last time and took a while to fire up after the resto. I just want to keep everything nice and oily inside so she turns over when starting instead of feeling like she's being roused from hibernation. One week, two weeks - longer? What do others tink? You should winterize the bike for the winter. Unless you plan on actually taking it out for a ride ever few weeks.

we dont have that cold a winter here in australia, unless you live in canberra, which would be a wasted life anyway, fire it up once a fornight for a good fifteen minutes, dont let it idle hold a fast idle, and blip it a bit, then blip it hard before shut down.

As much as I'd like to visit my friends in the United States of Assbackwardsland one day, I'm happy here in Upsidedownland, but I digress.  ;)

Do you have a good trickle charger Slug? I recently bought an Optimate 4 charger on Ebay, it's a great device, as it tests, charges, zaps the sulphation off the plates, and does all sorts of techo stuff to keep my battery alive. The thing I like is I can leave it connected to my battery for weeks or months at a time, so when I go to start my bike, my battery has always got plenty of "oomph" to fire the bike right up.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OptiMate-4-Battery-charger-Honda-/290721424599?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b058e4d7

I also found some Sta-bil fuel stabiliser at Repco, which is great stuff to stop the fuel in your tank from going "flat" over an extended period. Some of the Seppo's will waffle on about better products, they're probably right, but Sta-bil is OK. http://www.goldeagle.com/brands/stabil/products.aspx#stabil

With fresh fuel in your tank and a fully charged battery, your bike should start first time, every time, no matter how long you leave it, but as has been said above, it's good to run it at least once a fortnight, but I like to fire my bikes up every weekend, just so they remember that they are motorcycles, not just statues of motorcycles. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

3 to 4 times a week, except that week once a month when the missy is out of commission.

Oh, you mean to ride the motorcycle? :)  Longest I leave her sitting is two weeks - when I had to travel or couldn't get gloves on - dont ask :)

Up here in Canada (eh!)... lol ... my bike will sit for 5 months minimum. Just too damn cold to ride. My winter routine is to top the fuel right up with premium and add fuel stabilizer (ensure it's mixed in). Shut off the fuel at the petcock, drain the fuel from the bowls, remove the lines from the petcock and blow the remaining fuel out of the filter and bowls. I then place the battery inside usually where it won't freeze and trickle charge it every couple months.

Another thing I probably should do is get some cylinder fogger. Basically you pull the plugs and fog some of this stuff in the cylinders (pretty much just spray on lube) so that you don't get flash rusting on your cylinder walls. This is especially important on those cylinders where the cam has left the valves propped open slightly so moisture can travel in and out.

Some also say you should change the oil before it sits since the nasties built up in the oil can be harmful. They also say you should change it in the spring because waxes start to form in your oil during freeze/heating cycles. I only change mine in the spring.

If you can start up the bike and run it completely up to temperature once every couple of weeks it should be fine I would think... but I don't have that luxury! I don't think my bike would start well at -40C. ha

Yeah, old age presents timing problems for people and bikes. Problem with just starting it up every week is that if you don't let it get really hot, by riding it around, you'll get condensation in the pipes leading to premature rust out. Gotta get the exhaust hot enough to burn that out.

I've had a budget of time for bikes for the last many years. Riding, working, or combo. Its pretty fixed. If I'm working on one a lot, as I have been the others get neglected. And my riding skills diminish.

Stabilizer, trickle charger, and only start it when you're going to use it is my approach. Change the oil seasonally regardless of use.
