Installing New Piston Rings
« on: August 03, 2012, 11:09:14 AM »
I got a set of NOS MC piston rings that come with the one piece oil control ring.

In the box there is the top, 2nd, oil ring and a hexagonal piece that looks to me like it would have something to do with the oil control ring.

Where do I install the thin octagonal ring in the ring set? It does not fit in the groove of the oil ring so I'm a bit lost.

could the octagonal fit behind the wiper ring in the slots? or not in the slots? and just act as a spring for some reason?

I vote for behind the oil ring. Drop it in the groove of the piston, not the ring, first, then put the oil ring and see if you've got a ring end gap that's OK (10-15thou)

2nd vote goes for behind the second ring. The grooves should be different widths (in my experience) and you may be able to deduce the proper placement by "well it won't go here so it must go there".

Here's a discussion of same problem with a Studebaker. My first guess is right, I think.

Figured it all out, for some reason the first time I tried it just didn't seem right. The octagonal pieces goes behind the one piece Oil Control Ring and acts as a spring.

I checked the gaps of all the rings in the bore before installing them on the pistons and now everything is installed as it should be. Thanks guys!

The top ring should have a T stamped on the top. The letters face upwards.

When you get the box they are stacked correctly.

Thanks lucky, all three had a tiny T stamped in them and I made sure to triple check it was facing up. I also made sure they were in the correct order and checked the gaps in the bore before installing them.

Thanks again all!
