New guy from Wisconsin-CB550F
« on: September 13, 2012, 10:52:49 AM »
hey guys, I've been lurking for about a month on here and decided I should create an account so here I am.

A little background of me, 20 years old, served in the Army for 3 years now on inactive ready reserve for 5 years. Im getting married this weekend and I work full time as a welder at a fabrication shop.  we do medium to heavy gauge welding for Nordco, a rail road track maintenance company.

I last had a motorcycle a couple years ago, a 1979 Suzuki Gs550, i brought that back bike from the dead after sitting in a woods for 15 years.

that bike has since been sold and now I picked up a 1976 Honda CB550F for $100 and a 3.5 hour drive.  and currently she's stripped down to the frame with the wheels still on.  plan is to make her into a cafe racer.

the bikes gas tank is completely rotted away, rust holes through her.  so if anyone has a spare tank to sell let me know, i cant find any bike salvage yards in my area.  also when i took apart the carbs the bowls were literally filled with rust holding all the floats in place.  1 float pin is actually still stuck.  Im looking into buying a used set because the metal inside the carb started deteriorating away.

Ill probably be posting in the classifieds of some odds and ends that im not using, like taillight, rear fender, seat, tach gauge, and some other odds n ends.

Ill post pictures this weekend, im stuck to my android phone for awhile until we find a better ISP

I'm from Neillsville, clark county.  I always get neenah and necedah confused lol.

Well weddings over and it was a blast! from what I can remember! haha

So here are some photos of the old girl.

When I unloaded her from the truck.

Tearing her down.

Engine Out

As she sits today, hopefully get all tabs cut off this week before I go back to work.

Nobody worry about the bars, just on there to push the bike around probably going to use clip-ons tho, I feel really comfortable on the bike with the bars right there and using rear pegs.

the plan is to make her into a cafe style bike.  Im set on fire engine red frame and have black as a secondary color for knee dents on the tank.

I will be adding a rear hoop to the end of the frame for stuctural stability.

one thing i had a question on, the stock gas tank i have is severely rusted and even has holes in the side of the tank near the petcock, i was thinking about cutting the tank open and sandblasting the tank at work and welding in a patch and then weld the tank back together and i can leak test it at work.  does this seem like a good plan?  maybe i should start a build thread? kind of slow on the build but i try to reuse what i can to keep the cost down to make the wife happy haha

Well, the tank might be worse than I thought.

I think I still might be able to weld patches onto the rusted through areas.

  • "Newer" and "shinier" is not necessarily "better".

There are quite a few online junkyard places that cater to bikes... I know one in Minnesota that I have bought from and have never been disappointed.  Cant remember them at this moment, but I usually watch the ads in the back of the bike magazines as many salvage yards will advertise.

Having said that, if you are an experienced welder already, then you certainly are capable of repairing that tank... it will just take some work to do it right.  Keep us posted.  I'll have to try and find out if you movd this thread someplace else. :)

Yes, start a build thread. And personally, I would buy a new tank.

How's this, not great, but reasonably priced...

Ya I'm thinking a new tank too.  And now I will need a new frame, this bike was laid on its side in the past, crashbar was bent and handle bars and tail light.  The downtubes are bent outwards towards the front tire.

I made a new thread if you want to follow.
