upholstering bumstop seat - vinyl adhesive?
« on: August 29, 2012, 04:45:04 AM »
Hi all,

im in the final stages of bum stop seat mk2 for my 400 4, its all painted with foam shaped and attached, now working on the vinyl coverying. i have some plain black vinyl that im gonna get some help with the sowing (mum..) but need to attach the vinyl somehow.

i plan to attach the vinyl to the inside edge of the seat lengthways, obviously i cant staple in to fibreglass, any suggestions on what adhesive to use? i have a spray contact adhesive but dont know if that would hold well under tension (carpet tile spray glue). also, should the vinyl be glued to the foam itself?

at the bumstop, the finyl will overlap and i will use some double sided numberplate tape to hold it down over the top, im just having no luck searching the net for what is the best to use to stick the vinyl to the underneath of the seat.

thanks for any advice, i will upload a photo of the seat from my phone (without upholstery, just to show my rattlecan spray job...)

i use snap buttons for mine i thought it gives it a little character.but if you are set on using glue, 3m headliner glue is awesome.you will not find a better adhesive
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

If you can find some 3-M SUPER 77 contact cement it works great for this!! I did a seat for my sons bike and used the contact cement and it NEVER came loose..
Be sure to follow directions because once the dry cement on BOTH parts touch each other they are THERE to stay!!!

I work in an upholstery shop and do custom bikes seats some what regularly. Generally, when we make a seat, we make a custom drop in pan out of fiberglass or sometimes steel which we affix the foam to. The cover would get pulled over the foam and pan and riveted to the underside in premade holes, if it was a leather cover, or glued in place if its vinyl. Do you have any pictures of the seat set up? It would be much easier to suggest a route if I knew what I was visualizing was correct
