I wonder if someone can plasma spray, plate or weld up and grind those journals?

Its a shame,.. I have a Yosh ported head that dropped a valve. maybe we can make a three cylinder 375 out of our scrap parts :o

Hopefully the rod bearings look better?

Never thought about fixing the chamber! I'm glad I saved it. The problem is that a stock 650 head most likely flows better than the ported 550 head anyway?

Greggo I wouldn't give up on the crank.  They can be built back up and hard chromed / micro polished.  Check out Hot Rod shops that do cranks, there's lot in CA.  The problem will be bearings, as Honda only had a limited selection, and some are no longer available.  You'd probably have to source replacement bearings 1st, then have the crank repaired to suit.  Won't be cheap though.

I haven't given up just yet.  I'll take it up to my dad's shop partner, who will ultimately help me build this motor, and see if he thinks it's worth the work/$$ to save the crank.

I've been trying desperately to figure out what I'll need to make the magneto system work, but I've barely found anything. :-[

Has anyone here used a Yoshimura magneto?

I had APE fix a rod journal on my cbr900 crank...dont know why they couldn't fix yours unless they are all shot then price may be the factor.

Yes, I have to speak with them, and maybe Jay is still watching this thread, but I think having to do all five may be expensive.  However, if it could be done, I would do it eventually (after saving some $$).  The cool factor with this crank is off the charts (to me at least).  The seller was a regular in the SoCal racing scene, and apparently has a private museum down there...very possible it's a real Yoshi crank considering all the other Yoshi parts he listed off as having used back in the day.

Back to the magneto for a minute...I went looking for similar magneto set ups, and eventually found pics of the CB450/500 system.  The rotor pictured is for a CB450, and has the six poles, just like rotor on the lightened crank.  Am I on the right track here??  Could I pick up the stator from one of these bikes?  I could really use some guidance here.

I think on a 350 you can run batteryless, but may have to add a capacitor or battery eliminator..(they are small)

I seriously doubt that they were balancing those cranks when they modified them back then. If you take the rods off, send it down and I will check it out for you.

Hi Jay,

Would you folks be able to source bolts to use on these CB500/550 Yoshimura rods?

Thanks!!

I would have to see what they were. Also, we can fix the crank journals, but if it is more than one, it would be cheaper to find another crank.

You can send us the crank and a rod so I can check out the bolt. We will inspect the crank and let you know what we come up with.

Thank You Jay.  I am having them checked Friday by my dad's shop partner, and I will likely take the rods off as well.

I looked at your crank page.  Would the lightening/balancing quoted there bring it to this level, or somewhere between this crank and stock?

Just a question for knowledge sake...are the fasteners used on cranks for high speed/stress applications like this stronger than aircraft fasteners that are often metric 10.8 grade fasteners?
Do the fasteners have special properties that make them highly unique /specialized?

Yes on the modern bikes with Carrillos. The rod bolts are WAY stronger than 10.8.

Nice score Greggo!

Thanks Stev-o!  The quantity isn't there like the Motherlode, but for about the same price...the quality is sure there!  Just found a price list that has the CB500 Complete Magneto Assembly listed at...$613  :o :o 8) 8)

Separated the rods from the crank today, and the five journals are DEFINITELY shot.  We're looking into having them welded up, just to see how much it costs.  The rods will be stress checked at the same time.  Also removed the magneto rotor from the crank before it was sent out.
