CNC'd Triple Trees to mount GL1000 forks on CB750 frame
« on: August 30, 2012, 02:40:46 PM »
I know that a number of you would like a clean looking set of triple trees to mount GL1000 (37mm) forks on your CB750 -- and ditch the ugly GL1000 stock triple trees.

Rob at Voxonda is working on some for me similar to his regular CB750 trees.  http://www.voxonda.com/2010/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=36&category_id=8&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=54

You'll have to go through Rob (he's a forum member).  Right now, I'm trying to measure my Acewell digital speedo tach, so Rob can make some mounting points for my dash.

I think there's a strong interest level in the forum for this product. I'm away this weekend but I have to get Rob some measurements for my digital dash so he can design in some mounting holes.

I sent Rob the specs on Joker's triples -- where they tap their gauge mounting screw holes -- and asked him to do the same.  I love the look and strength of the Joker triples, but they do not make them in 37mm.  By using Joker's specs, this would allow users to use Joker's mounting plates or fabricate their own.

I've also sent a note expressing my interest. I had been working with a fellow Bill Hansen at Custom Triple Trees, but he seems to have become distracted by other endeavors.

Last month, branden, azuredesign, M.Harrigan, Really?, mazen0822 and I were set to have gsnorcal mill us some triples, but it fell through (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=110216.0).

I'm hoping with the specs supplied to Rob at Voxonda that we can get this done.  He'd be the only supplier and with the exposure on the forum, I'm sure he would get a decent number of buyers.

Still waiting to hear back from Rob and hoping we are on track.

Hi there,

Yes I can supply the triples for the GL front, like Donald says and am willing to make it happen, but.........
there are a few issue's to consider. The triples are designed for use with clipons only, and have no mounts for clocks. Can make some exceptions but I have to stay with the design. Another thing to consider is what off-set to use. The oem is 60 m/m but is one factor in the 'wobble' that can occure. In my experience a smaller off-set of 45 - 50 m/m will improve syability. Next is the width of the triples, oem is 182 but for the GL front it is 192m/m to accept the oem 750 front wheel. The lowers from the GL are beefier, Length of front axle may have to be altered..
If you are interested, please let me know and please do not hesitate to come up with questions, if possible I can make some alterations.

Kind regards, Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

Rob,

I am using GL1000 forks, brake discs and axle, so fitment should not be an issue and stock width should be fine.  I want it made to fit a GL1000 wheel.  I am also going with clip-ons.  However, I do want some means to mount gauges (in my case a digital Acewell model).

As for the offset, I am not sure if I should deviate from the stock offset.  I've heard all kinds of "warnings" that altering the offset will change the stability of the bike.  I would like the bike to turn in better, but not at the risk of a tankslapper.  How will the offset affect the ability bike's abilty to turn in?

Donald

Honda changed to offset on later models for MORE stability, as long as you know what you are doing it is all good, Rob knows his stuff and i can guarantee you he would not sell you anything that is dangerous. The early K models KO-K6 had 60mm offset which gave trail of just over 3 and a half inches, which is quite a small number and can lead to tank slappers if the whole front end isn't perfect. I have had some very bad tank slappers with the stock set up with everything set up well. I am having some clamps with 50mm offset made for 2 of my bikes, later F model honda's had similar offset {50mm} and were generally said to handle better than the earlier K bikes. Less offset means more trail and thats exactly where the extra stability comes from. You shouldn't be having any trouble with turn in, the steering on these old girls is quite quick, maybe an 18 inch front wheel will suit you better, it is a common mod on period race bikes and allows for a better range of tire choice

This is what I'm looking for. I'm using clip-ons so that ok but I would like to keep the stock width. Im using a GL wheel and have a modern break kit on it  I would also like to be able to mount a acewell gauge on it. As far as offset goes I would like to go to 45mm if its for the whole tree or stock if its just the top.

Also here's my curve ball  if we do the whole tree could you make one with a 550 stem?

When this thread started I thought it was just the top tree.

If the tree is flat, ie no down offset, the forks will be a bit shorter as well...just saying..

Ok, here's where I am with Rob (Voxonda).  Rob is drawing up CNC plans to make a set if triple trees for GL1000 37mm forks with a 45mm offset and tapped screw holes to mount my digital dash (the screw holes will match the size/spacing of Joker's trees).

If there's anyone else out there (like Mazen) who like this set up, I would contact Rob.

I just got word from Rob (Voxonda) that he's finalizing the CNC plans for the triple trees.  YES!!!!  After he works out some final details, he will run a set.

It sounds like we are getting close to 37mm lightweight (but sturdier) triple trees to adapt the GL1000 forks!!

I will be sure to post some pictures, and I am sure there will be some additional orders to Rob!

Wow, the ones on his site look pretty and perfect.  I may not sell my project after all!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
