Rejetting and Mufflers
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:09:23 AM »

I finely picked up a set of cross over 4-2 pipes for my 550 supersport (1&4 to one side and 2&3 to the other). Do you think I will need to rejet going from the stock 4-1? If anything right now the bike is running fairly rich even with the single K&N that bolts to in place of the stock air filter (One air filter for the 4 carbs).

So as I said is rejetting necessary?

and also I will be looking for different mufflers as I dont much like these trucker ones I have now. What should I know about back pressure? Could I take essentially a straight pipe the same size as the headers (looks like about 1"1/2 each) and slide in a baffle? Should I try and copy the existing diameter of the mufflers I have now? I know there probably is not an exact answer to this, in theory I would like the bike to run better then it did before (HondaMan recommended the 4-2 for more torque).

Thanks for the help!

You will probably not have to rejet.
Just a mixture screw adjustment may be all that is needed.

4-4 will always run better than 4-2 with stock jetting setup.

As far as getting baffles on there that create back pressure you might be able to find something like Supertrapp can slip ons.

You can always try to find a used stock 4-4 setup somewhere for the easiest fit.

thanks, DuckieFrankenkit the stock exhaust was the 4-1 as I have the supersport, The only real reason I wanted to pick up this set was after reading HondaMan's recommendation and how it can really improve the torque on these bikes.

The last bit, and why I was asking about simply a pipe and baffle option is that money is really tight and I would rather do this on the cheap. Otherwise I would probably pick up those dunstall replica pipes to use.

Just wait and see. Then we can talk about jetting - IF it is needed.

Sorry about that, I forgot you had an SS model, 4-2 would probably be better in your case.
