Hello, new guy here from Canada. So happy to have found this forum!
Here's my story/intro so please bear with me. My very first motorcycle was a new 1971 Honda cb 175 twin, bought when I was 15. I rode this around in our field until I got my license at 16. I really wanted to buy (with my own money) the 350 twin but my dad didn't let me because the biggest motorcycle he had back in Germany was a 250 single BMW. He and my mom did trips into France and Italy with that bike and my dad rode it year round with a sidecar. When my mom got pregnant with me, they sold the bike to get a little Fiat 500 car.
Later, after I got married 22 years ago, I bought my first BMW, a 1981 R100/7, and then a 1976 R90/6. The interesting story about the R90/6 is that it was BMW's response to the wildly popular new Honda CB 750 of the day.
Cut to the present: 2 days ago I trailered home my very own 1975 K5 750. My buddy, it's previous owner, hadn't ridden it in years. The last license sticker was from 2003. We rode together on a couple of longer trips, to PEI and down to Tennessee: him on his CB750, and me on my BMW. He hadn't ridden in years, has no time to maintain this bike, and it was taking up room in his garage. His wife even bumped it a few times garraging her car.
So he offered it to me for a case of beer! Needless to say, I bought him 2 cases and added in $100, and now I am also an ecstatic sohc 750 owner! I have not tried to start it as it needs an oil change and a battery at the very least. The bike is stock, 31,000miles on the odometer, the chrome is developing rust pits, it needs a new side cover, but the engine is not seized.
Reading on this forum feverishly for information over the last couple of days, I'm getting a good idea of the work that needs doing and am looking forward to asking for your help.

Smackin' great looking planet blue. Would really pop out nice with the luggage rack off and new Honda 4 into 4 exhaust, but it is your bike.

Color looks good with not much fading. Can you get us more pics...one thing you will learn is we really, really, really like pics here...really...we do...really...

Original exhaust is available from Honda again as there was a big call for it with the number of guys restoring these. Not cheap, but still available. Welcome to the boards...

Thanks everyone, especially the old timers. Here are items that need attention, gleaned just from reading this forum over the last few days:

Exhaust
Flat/superbike/euro handlebars
Side covers
Oil filter, 20/50 oil
Fuel inline filter
RK x-ring chain
Steering head tapered bearings
Swing arm bushings -> bronze bearings
Rear shocks
electronic ignition
halogen headlight
after market coils with new wires and plug caps
Size 530 chain and sprockets
Mothers mag polish

Great to hear about the original reporduction exhaust, but that will have to wait towards the end of this project.

I'll be posting lots of pics now that I know how with the iPad using photobucket. In truth, my motorcycle hobby is second to my photography hobby, also old school, meaning B+W film, home developing and wet darkroom. There's nothing better than combining both hobbies!

And why do you think you need inline fuel filters? Tank rusty??

As these gas tanks get older and older there is an increasing likelihood of material other than gas coming out of them. It's just way easier to catch these particulates in a filter than dealing with a plugged up carb, no? I'd rather avoid working on a carb, as it's just not my favourite wrenching activity.

Awesome story.

Regarding posting with the iPad, I would recommend the Tapatalk app. It connects to the forum, makes it really easy (and fast) to read/write the forum. And it has a really nice interface for adding photos to posts.

Actually now thinking about it unconsciously for a day, I think their first car was called an isetta. It is a 2-seater with a single door opening to front. Same 250 single engine as the BMW motorcycle?

There is room, I have them on the K2 I just bought. Highly recommend that you clean out your tank and petcock. If your tank is not rusty and you maintain a clean fuel supply, filters should not be needed.
