CB400F intake manifold installation tip
« on: August 31, 2012, 07:50:05 AM »
Every time after I have crammed the plastic intake manifold between the carbs and the airbox, I wrestle with getting all of the "snorkels" fully seated. I just tried a different approach. I pushed an uninflated bicycle inner tube into the manifold from the airbox, and inflated the tube until everything was seated. I tightened the clamps and then deflated the tube.

If I had thought of this before the wrestling match of getting the manifold into place, I would have planted the uninflated tube inside of the manifold first. Shoving it in from the airbox is not particularly easy.

I don't at all get what you're talking about, but I'm intrigued.

You're somehow using a bicycle tube to line up and attach the rubbers between the airbox and the carbs?

Can you provide a picture and/or a hand-drawn diagram of what you're doing?

Looking at the line drawing (view from above), the black is the airbox and its five snorkels. The red is a folded bicycle inner tube.

I crammed as much into the airbox as I could while leaving the stem outside.

After inflating the tube, the front side of the air box was pushed toward the carbs while the back side was pushed toward the airbox, seating all five snorkels.

Very cool. Thanks for this. It should definitely be added to the Tips & Tricks section. Not sure how to do that, though.

Ingenious! I've always struggled with the inner two snorkels and have had to use the heat gun to massage them in. This would make the job way easier.

i honestly cannot believe that worked. if you had stiff, s#!tty old boots i'd bet on the airbox busting open before those boots seat.

Ah Crap ! First let me say Excellent tip !!! I may be going through the same thing in the near future. And putting this in "Tips and Tricks" like "vames" suggested is a great idea as well ! Now here is my problem (Sorry, not being an A**) , the item you are calling "intake manifold" is incorrect. Correct me if I'm wrong, the intake manifold is between the carbs and the head. David Silver Spares calls piece you're talikng about an "Air filter box manifold chamber". "hondapartshouse" calls it "Chamber Assembly" . The only reason I bring this up is if it is to be saved somewhere it Needs to be saved with Correct Identification so it can be found when looking for that Item.  Kinda like trying to find a certian "wheel" when you're looking for a "tire".     Like I said Excellent Tip that should be saved !!! Just save it correctly (in the title) so it can be easier to find.   ...cougar...

Good point, Cougar. My terminology was sloppy, particularly in the last post where I called the air filter box manifold chamber the "airbox."

I know it as a 'plenum chamber'

that is pretty cool idea, i usually snug the center 2 to where they just drag a bit, and have to poke a large crescent wrench or a piece of wood to push in 2 and 3, they're always the ones lagging. that plenum or whatever it is, must get warped. it's always a little stubborn spot.

Using the inner tube method is quite common over the pond here in UK. I've never had to resort to it myself but those I know that have used it laugh at the rest of us for struggling and swearing.
