CB750A Wheelies!

Who said that our 750 Hondamatic's can't lift a front wheel . . .  8)
1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

An anti-gravity machine tucked in behind the headlight?
Invisible ballast behind the rear wheel?

I love my "A",  but the only way she'll do a wheelie is
with a fork lift attached to the front end ;D

Second time that picture's on the forums. I posted it the first time in Sam's Hondamatic build. Just because you don't start with much power doesn't mean that you can't add it. Yes, a few Hondamatics will do legit wheelies. It requires torque to cause  the  front wheel to start up toward the sky as you get into the fat part of the powerband. A good rear tire is also needed. When you start running low 12's in the quarter like the bike in the picture (Dale Walker), you may have the results shown. I didn't go skyward until I got into the 11's. Wheelie bars help to prevent that wasted motion. My bike wheelies about 100' out with a 10" extended wheelbase, goes up until the wheelie bar wheels hit, then it comes right back down. It's a power wheelie - slow to come up. Check out Sam's Hondamatic build in the high performance section. If they tune it right with the better cam, it will soon be challenging Sam's skills this November.  You can build a lot more power (and fun) into your Hondamatic. It's not top end power, but is improved especially in the midrange. Drag Hondamatics would make great street bikes. Crisp throttles, good idles, quick starts, and power that just pulls well right up to redline. Just don't use the clutch version SOHC setups as they are designed for higher rpm operations.  ;)

Leave it in neutral, hold the throttle WFO and slam it in to low gear
it might left the tire

Well the CB750A does have the aluminum wheels that are 6 lbs. lighter that the steel version.

Can that really be called a wheelie? I had a 50cc scooter with a CVT that would do a better wheelie than that.

     The picture is of a drag racing bike. It's not a wheelie contest. Going up is wasted motion of a rider who wants only to go forward. The Hondamatic twins were much more wheelie prone at the drag strip.
     You can gear any Hondamatic for getting the front end up in a hurry. The down side is controlling the results. I wrenched a knee putting a foot down when my Hondamatic twin was trying to flip me over backwards leaving the starting line. If you've got more money than brains, feel free to waste as much of each as you'd like to for better pictures.

Yeah, this isn't a drag race thread - it is a wheelie thread.

I've ridden lot's of bike, and I do like the ability to lift the front end once in a while.

Back when I had my H2, I could ride it on the bike tire - and learned to "steer" by slightly leaning left/right.  That was long ago - lost my license on points - one of the tickets was directly in front of the law - didn't see him until it was too late.

Anyway - now I only have one bike, and I do wish I could wheelie every once in a while.  Me thinks I just need another bike to play around on.

Do I wish I could wheelie on my A - sure.  Do I expect it to ever happen, no.  I'll be riding an 836 A someday, but I still don't think it will wheelie - unless I goose it going over a bump or crest of a hill . . . ?   ;)
