Rear Bridgestone BT45 tire wearing fast
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:01:07 PM »
My rear bridgestone bt45 tire appears to be wearing quite quickly. I've put maybe 500 miles on my bike and the tread is already flat straight across and lost probably about half of it's center tread depth. The front by comparison is not showing much wear. I have them both around 35psi. Would higher or lower psi cause a tire to wear more or less? Just curious of that relationship.

Thanks

500 miles?  35 psi is good, higher pressure would cause the center to wear quicker.
Rear tires do wear quicker than fronts. Doesn't sound good.

Make sure you aren't inflating to the hot psi number. A tire has a hot psi and a cold psi. If you inflate to the hot psi while cold, the pressure will increase as your tire warms up and will then be overinflated as you ride. This would cause premature center tread wear.

I got about 6500 miles out of my BT45 rear before the center tread depth was worn to zero. 3.25/19 front, 4.0/18 rear on a CB 550.

Bridgestones' recommendations are 40 psi  rear, 36 front at about 70°F

Do yo have pics? What are your tire sizes?

Did you go with a significantly oversize tire for the rim?

What size is tire are you using? To wide on the stock rim you get a square tire.

Alright I may have been a little dramatic and exaggerated a little. But it is squaring off a bit quicker than I'd think it would. At this rate I'll be replacing it at 2000 maybe 3000 miles. Would lowering the pressure help extend it's life a little? I haven't checked it's hot PSI.
