What is this part?
« on: September 06, 2011, 12:20:01 PM »
I have a Go kart with the cb 550 engine in it. I was wondering what this part is/does. Cause it leaks a LOT of oil while running. Is there a gasket that goes there that could be shot?

It's the oil pump. O-rings deteriorate over time. I had to renew mine once when on a holiday in Spain. O-rings are still available.

That is the pump, with the oil pressure sensor sitting on top, 3 orings seal the pump.  If the sensor is leaking a new one is required. or if you dont use the lights, plug it with a pipe threaded bolt.

also it looks like your starter could use another bolt

Thanks guys, now I gotta get the screws loose.

I had some pod filters on, but they keep flying off. new ones are on the way

Oh, it hauls alright! I'll try and get another video of a flyby if you want. Unfortunately I can't ride it much anymore since its home from my shop for the summer. Its so loud, I need to find something to dampen it.

Replace the 3 Phillip screws with allens, you will get more consistent torque and less leaks.

Easier to remove and they look better too. Worth replacing any + screw with an allenhead to be honest. The original screws mauleasilyand often require an impact wrench to remove.

Also, it looks like the mount that has a bolt is cracked.

Yes it is cracked, I'm waiting for this engine to crap out on me. It's been used so much especially from the previous owner.

Yes, there is a shifter on the right side of the steering wheel, that rocks forward and back, forward being 1st, back being the rest of the gears. I'll get a picture in a little bit.

How fast do these 550 bikes get up to? Heres my GPS timeslip.

Sockles: Dam cool. Those little four cylinders are just the right size for these kind of projects. I did something similar a few years ago....................

3/4 scaled down from a real one.....Couldn't afford to to the real thing!!

Warwick: Just a side note.... That oil pressure sending unit fitting is not 1/8" NPT. It is 1/8" BSP. All Japanese motorcycles and cars have used the BSP pipe fitting system forever. You can cross-thread a 1/8" NPT fitting in there and it probably won't leak....but it's not right. You probably knew this...but for others take note.

http://pipeandhose.com/node/2

It's a looong story as to why the Japanese went with the British threading for pipe and not made their own metric stuff....goes way back to the big industrial revolution. As far as I can tell only the USA and Canada use the Imperial pipe threads?

How do you get that oil pressure sending unit off? I have a CB750 with the same gizmo only it is in a corner where you can't get your fingers around it.
Thank you
