Baffle options for Kerker
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:53:42 pm »
My Kerker baffle came in a separate box when I bought my 78 cb 750. Without it, the bike is just crazy loud, angers my neighbors, and hastens my hearing loss. The baffle lacks the end cap, and the flange has been pretty beat up, probably when the PO took it out.

I tried to re-wrap the old baffle and put it back in, but I don't have the end cap, so the fiberglass blows out the rear end. It looks terrible. Though it did sort of work.

Now I just want to buy a baffle/end cap, but I want it to do the job of quieting down the bike.

Dynoman has "competition" baffles for the kerker for $119. That's pricey, especially since my Kerkers are nicely scuffed up, and a bit misshapen at the outlet.

MAC replacements for the Kerker are a more reasonable $50, but they appear to be entirely hollow, with the exhaust just passing through. That looks like it'd be pretty loud. Anyone have one and willing to report on just how effective they are?

I've tried and failed at fashioning an end cap to work with my old baffle.

Carpy's scorcher is another option. Another thread around here asked for a recommendation between the scorcher and the MAC baffle, and the responses were in favor of the MAC, though I wonder if the scorcher is actually quieter.

Anyhow, does anyone have any advice on how to cap and quiet this old Kerker? It's 2.5" where the exhaust meets the header.

Thanks.

I would use a supertrapp universal s/c silencer. The Kerker headers are good but the mufflers rusted out pretty quickly: throwing money at one for a replacement baffle may be a poor idea. If it's good with no rust, you could get an end cap made at a machine shop I think. The baffle is just a pipe with a lot of holes in it, wrapped with mineral wool tied on with wraps of stainless steel wire (not fiberglass, which is too delicate and will just  disintegrate and blow through the holes). It should be fairly well sealed at the outlet, and have a sealing disk at the inside end that fits reasonably well to the internal diameter of the canister - a tight seal is not required.

Kerker makes different baffles beside the one comp baffle. Street baffle is quiet but sounds good when you crank it. My Mac tailpiece for my stock header is offset inside without any packing. Looks like it would have back pressure unless you cut the front half off.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Ive been wanting to get the MAC baffle for my Kerker for a bit now.  I just want some more sound out of the bike.  I suppose you could wrap some exhaust packing around the baffle and tone it down a little bit.

Here you go mate, these guys have a very good selection of baffles, and their service is first class! ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
