1975 CB550K 4 into 2 with K&N pod filters question
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:23:20 AM »
Hi- I'm a new owner and new member to the forum.  A couple days ago I bought a 1975 CB550K.  Its got ~10,000 miles on it and I got a good deal on it because its not all original. It has a gas tank from a '78, an aftermarket 4 into 2 exhaust, aftermarket rear shocks.... It came with a big bucket full of spare parts (extra clutch, points assembly, entire set of extra signals, tail light, etc).  In the bucket is also an entire brake system which is cool because it looks like I can pretty easily add a 2nd disc up front.

The bike runs really well.  I use the choke to start it and I can turn it off right away. It idles right at 1200 which seems right and then idles at closer to 2000 when I've been riding for about 20 minutes (maybe a little high?).  It shifts smoothly, previous owner rebuilt the brake so thats working great.

The previous owner installed K&N pod filters- I asked him if he rejetted and he said no, the online consensus was that you didn't need to.  Well that seems to go against everything I have been reading on this forum.  He told me that he cleaned & synced the carbs, installed new stock-size jets and returned carb settings to stock.  I am still pretty new to working on bikes and haven't needed to get into rejetting so far.  I would prefer if he had at least kept all the old air cleaner parts but it seems the only thing left from that system is the cleaner housing.  The 4 into 2 exhaust is pretty quiet so I imagine its about as restrictive as the original exhaust would have been.

The bike does seem to hesitate at mid throttle.  Would that seem to indicate that I should try going up a size on the main jets?

At this point I'm not sure what would be my best move...just try to get a stock air cleaner system to put back in there or to try rejetting and just go with what I have (the second would be undoubtedly cheaper).

It looks like on the parts fiche I am reading (from CMSNL) I need at the least...
#19, hose clamps, #15
Honestly its a little confusing to tell what exactly I'm missing.  Anyone selling a more or less complete air cleaner system?

OK thanks thats very helpful.  Previous owner marked needle set 3rd from top, so position 4 would be one more down yeah?
I'll try that and see how it works out
